Info for Harris Eisenstadt: You Have Options
This new international chamber-jazz trio with classical and avant leanings features beautiful tunes and tasty improvisation. Canadian clarinetist François Houle, British pianist Alexander Hawkins, and NY-based Canadian drummer Harris Eisenstadt are highly regarded leaders and genuinely sympatico. The program features original compositions by all three plus pieces by Steve Lacy, Andrew Hill and Charles Ives.
The group first came together for the 2014 Vancouver jazz festival and played some wild improvisational music but the record is mostly on the more lyrical and contemplative side. Houle and Eisenstadt and Hawkins and Eisenstadt have long histories of performing together, but Alex and François had not met previously. Their performing blend is different from previous Houle projects on Songlines with European pianists Benoît Delbecq and Håvard Wiik – perhaps more classically poised and spacious, but warm rather than cool, and with an edge when needed. Harris’s fastidious, highly textured drumming is the perfect percussive complement.
“Celebrated Canadian progressive jazz clarinetist Francois Houle enlists an all-star support system for a comprehensive album that radiates numerous slants amid ethereal backwashes, scrappy improvisation and softly explorative passages.” – Glenn Astarita, AllAboutJazz
“Houle has documented a pretty broad spectrum of work, from 20th century interpretations to chamber/modern jazz and ethnographically inspired improvisation….Genera is a very fine record that displays excellently Houle’s writing and the ability of his chosen ensemble to both strut their stuff and express [his] vision. – Clifford Allen, Point of Departure
“British pianist Alexander Hawkins makes jazz that sounds familiar and yet unimaginable…It’s taken Hawkins a while to get around to the classic jazz piano-trio format, but he makes it memorably his own.” – John Fordham, The Guardian
“With each subsequent release, pianist-composer Alexander Hawkins further cements his place in the top tier of modern, forward-thinking artists.” – Karl Ackermann, AllAboutJazz
“For every action Eisenstadt takes as a writer and arranger, he provides an equally considered response….This attention to pacing, detail and contrast is one of the best things about Recent Developments.” – Bill Meyer, DownBeat
“…rich and wide-ranging…[Recent Developments] stands as a stunning and thought provoking achievement.” – John Sharpe, AllAboutJazz
