Info for Positif

Positif is Phil’s fourth album featuring this particular line-up of excellent musicians, but it is the ensemble’s first “live” recording. Several of the tunes had been performed as concert material, but all were either written or arranged after the release of Phil’s 2016 Jazz Album of the Year release, Panacea.

This is the fourth album I’ve recorded with this line-up of very fine musicians. Our previous three albums, the ‘Dedication’ trilogy, were all recorded at the Kenneth Myers Center in Auckland, so it seemed fitting to use the venue again to record this set of new compositions, only this time with an audience present." Phil Broadhurst
is a leading New Zealand jazz artist. In 2001 he became the first jazz musician to be awarded the MNZM for services to jazz. He was Head of Jazz Studies at the New Zealand School of Music (Massey University, Auckland) from 2000 to 2016, and in 2008 was awarded an M.Phil for his thesis on French jazz pianist Michel Petrucciani. A well-known broadcaster, he presented The Art of Jazz, a weekly jazz programme on Radio New Zealand Concert for over 20 years. His numerous credits include performing at major jazz festivals and events in New Zealand, Australia, the USA, UK and France, and collaborating with many jazz greats visiting NZ, such as Johnny Griffin, Ronnie Scott, and Scott Hamilton.

Positif is his fourth album for Rattle, following his “dedication trilogy”, Delayed Reaction (Jazz Album of the Year finalist, 2011), Flaubert’s Dance (Jazz Album of the Year finalist, 2013), and Panacea (Jazz Album of the Year, 2016). Phil has won the Jazz Album of the Year Tui Award four times in his substantial and highly-revered career.
