Info for Brahms: Four Sonatas for Cello & Piano
Diese Aufnahme überrascht, da sie neben den beiden Cellosonaten auch zwei Violinsonaten von Johannes Brahms enthält – vom Violoncello interpretiert. Die Transkription war im 19. Jahrhundert gängige Praxis, sei es nur, um die Verbreitung der Werke zu einer Zeit zu erleichtern. Brahms selbst hat seine beiden Klarinettensonaten op. 120 für die Bratsche transkribiert.
Nachdem Brahms seine Violinsonate op. 108 bereits 1886 skizziert hatte, verfeinerte er sie zwei Jahre später am Thunersee. Der Komponist scheint im Alter von 55 Jahren eine Reife der Inspiration und des Schreibens erreicht zu haben, deren Fülle hier durch den tieferen, wärmeren Ton des Violoncellos verstärkt wird.
