Info zu La Cinquième Saison

With its elegant figure and its glinting timbre, the mandolin has survived the centuries, inspiring the greatest composers, from Vivaldi to Stravinsky and Led Zeppelin.

Julien Martineau makes his instrument captivate the audiences all over the world. His new album presents concertos by Corentin Apparailly and Karol Beffa, works in which virtuosity and emotion merge into a re-assertion of the place of the mandolin in the classical repertoire, also opening new prospects for this exceptional instrument. The Fifth Season thus proves to be far more than a mere recording; it is a real manifesto for the mandolin.

We all think we know it, its elegant figure and the many glints of light of its timbre. Yet the mandolin is much more than a simple reminder of Italy and dolce vita. It has survived the centuries inspiring the greatest composers: Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, Stravinsky, but also Yann Tiersen or Led Zeppelin. Alternately baroque, romantic, contemporary or rock, the mandolin is an unsuspected muse which is today revealing all its sonic refinement.

As a high school student, I would perform at Opéra de Paris and play concertos with the orchestra of Lycée Condorcet; that was the moment when I felt an irresistible call to music. From then on, the mandolin, a promising and mysterious instrument, offered me a marvellous, unique exploration playground.

Having recorded the masterpieces of the historical repertoire, from Vivaldi to Calace, and collaborated with such first-rate artists and ensembles as Rinaldo Alessandrini and his Concerto Italiano, Vanessa Benelli Mosell or the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse conducted by Wilson Ng, I regard The Fifth Season as a new landmark in my musical quest.

In a context where classical music often struggles to establish itself in the long term, it has always been my ambition to enrich the repertoire with works which can surpass the simple experience of a single concert for the creation of each of them. To become a true classic, like the Concierto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo, each of these works must simultaneously be uncompromising in terms of artistic quality and remain easily accessible to the public at large.
