Virtuosi Ilya Gringolts, violin, and Dmitry Kouzov, cello, perform three great duos- two from the 20th century and one from the 21st. The graceful, expressive and witty Duo for Violin and Cello by Hanns Eisler, written when the composer was 26 years old, is a multifaceted work showcasing the composer’s brilliant intellect. Best-known for his long artistic association with playwright Bertolt Brecht, Eisler always took care to make a deep connection with his audience. In Jorg Widmannn’s 24 Duos for Violin and Cello, from 2008, the two instruments approach the sound of a string quartet at times. “They attract each other, reject each other, love and hate each other,” the composer writes. These performances are the world premiere recording of the entire set of both volumes of Widmann’s 24 Duos. The album concludes with Maurice Ravel’s great Sonata for Violin and Cello. Dedicated to the memory of Claude Debussy, the sonata is always a favorite with audiences. Gringolts and Kouzov form a superb duo. Both are highly sought-after soloists and consummate chamber musicians. They perform with precision and excitement, undaunted by challenging music.

Trotz seines jungen Alters kann Ilya Gringolts schon auf fünfzehn außergewöhnlich erfolgreiche Jahre in seiner Karriere als Geiger zurückblicken. Mit seiner großen Neugier auf musikalische Herausforderungen hat er sich in dieser Zeit als hervorragende künstlerische Persönlichkeit bewiesen.

Nachdem er zunächst Violine und Komposition in St. Petersburg bei Tatiana Liberova und Jeanna Metallidi studiert hatte, besuchte er als Schüler von Itzhak Perlman die Juilliard School. Bereits 1998 ging er als Gewinner des internationalen Violin-Wettbewerbs "Premio Paganini” hervor, als jüngster Teilnehmer im Finale der Wettbewerbsgeschichte. Inzwischen widmet er sich als Solist insbesondere auch selten gespielten und zeitgenössischen Werken. Kompositionen von Peter Maxwell Davies, Augusta Read Thomas, Christophe Bertrand und Michael Jarrell wurden von ihm uraufgeführt. Daneben gilt sein künstlerisches Interesse auch der historischen Aufführungspraxis. So präsentierte er im Sommer 2010 beim Verbier Festival zusammen mit Masaaki Suzuki den kompletten Zyklus der Bach-Sonaten auf einer Barockvioline. Er ist außerdem Primarius des 2008 gegründeten Gringolts Quartettes.

In der Saison 2013/14 ist Ilya Gringolts unter anderem als Solist mit den Bamberger Symphonikern (unter der Leitung von Eivind Aadland), dem Copenhagen Philharmonic (Santtu-Matias Rouvali), dem Iceland Symphony (Ilan Volkov), dem BBC Scottish Symphony (Ilan Volkov), dem Taipei Symphony (Oleg Caetani), dem Columbus Symphony (Thomas Wilkins) und dem Galician Symphony Orchestra (Osmo Vänskä) zu erleben. Mit Kammermusik ist er zudem unter anderem beim Verbier Festival, beim Gstaad Festival und, zusammen mit Maxim Vengerov, im Barbican Centre London zu Gast.

In den letzten fünfzehn Jahren konzertierte Ilya Gringolts weltweit mit führenden Orchestern wie dem Mahler Chamber Orchestra, dem Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, dem Birmingham Symphony, dem Deutschen Symphonie Orchester Berlin, dem BBC Symphony, dem Sao Paulo Orchestra, dem Israel Philharmonic, dem Chicago Symphony, dem London Philharmonic, dem Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, dem Los Angeles Philharmonic, dem Melbourne Symphony, dem NHK Symphony Orchestra, dem Hallé Orchestra und den beiden Orchestern der SWR.

Ebenso häufig ist Ilya Gringolts mit Rezitalprogrammen zu erleben. Er ist regelmäßiger Gast bei den Festivals in Luzern, Kuhmo, Colmar und Bukarest (Enescu Festival) sowie bei den Mailänder Serate Musicali und in der Sankt Petersburger Philharmonie. Als Kammermusiker arbeitet er mit Künstlern wie Yuri Bashmet, Lynn Harrell, Diemut Poppen, Nicolas Angelich, Itamar Golan, Peter Laul, Nicolas Hodges und Jörg Widmann zusammen.

Nach zahlreichen von der Kritik hochgelobten CD-Produktionen bei der Deutschen Grammophon und Hyperion widmete sich Ilya Gringolts mit seinen drei zuletzt bei Onyx erschienenen Aufnahmen Werken Robert Schumanns: den Violinsonaten Nr. 1-3 mit Peter Laul (2010), den Klaviertrios zusammen mit Dmitry Kouzov und Peter Laul (2011) und den Streichquartetten wie auch dem Klavierquintett mit dem Gringolts Quartet und Peter Laul (2011). Für die CD Taneyev – Chamber Music war er bereits 2006 zusammen mit Mikhail Pletnev, Vadim Repin, Nobuko Imai und Lynn Harrell mit dem Gramophone Award ausgezeichnet worden. Im Laufe der nächsten Monate werden eine CD mit allen Capricci von Niccolo Paganini sowie eine integrale Aufnahme der Streichquartette von Johannes Brahms (beide bei Orchid Classics) erscheinen.

Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Professor an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste wirkt Ilya Gringolts regelmäßig als Violin International Fellow am Royal Scottish Conservatoire in Glasgow. Er spielt eine Stradivari von 1718-1720, die ihm aus privatem Besitz zur Verfügung.

Dmitry Kouzov
A versatile performer, cellist Dmitry Kouzov has performed on five continents with orchestras, in solo and duo recitals, and in chamber music performances. He has appeared with such orchestras as the St. Petersburg Symphony (Russia), as well as National Symphony of Ukraine, and the South Bohemian Chamber Philharmonic (Czech Republic), and the Symphony Orchestra “Classica” (Russia), to name a few. He has awarded First Prize at the International Beethoven Competition in the Czech Republic and he is a two-time laureate of the International Festival-Competition “Virtuosi of the Year 2000” in Russia and is winner of the New York Cello Society Rising Star Award. His credits include numerous performances at many prominent concert venues throughout his native Russia, including both St. Petersburg Philharmonic Halls, the conservatoire halls of Moscow and St. Petersburg, respectively, and the Mariinsky Theater. Mr. Kouzov made his New York orchestral debut at Alice Tully Hall in 2005, under the baton of Maestro Raymond Leppard. Since that time, he has also made recital appearances in New York at 92nd Street Y and Bargemusic.

Highlights of Mr. Kouzov recent seasons include his debuts with the the Symphony Orchestra of St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra, Johannesburg Philharmonic, solo appearances with the chamber orchestra “Soloists of St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society”, duo recitals in Moscow and St. Petersburg with all Brahms and Beethoven Sonatas with the prominent Russian pianist Peter Laul, and chamber music appearances at the Ravinia and Caramoor Festivals Rising Stars Series. Most recently, Mr. Kouzov made his recording debut on Naxos with three C.P.E. Bach Gamba Sonatas and a recital CD “Two Hundred Years of Cello Masterpieces” on Marquis Classics.

Mr. Kouzov has appeared in command performances before Mikhail Gorbachev and Prince Andrew, Duke of York. In 2005 and 2006, he was a guest artist at the Verbier Festival, International Bach Festival (Switzerland) and Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival (Germany). Additionally, he has performed at the “May of Janacek” International Festival (Czech Republic), and at the “Art-November” International Festival (Russia), and the “Kiev Summer Music Nights” International Festival, amongst others.

A consummate chamber musician, Mr. Kouzov has collaborated with Joshua Bell, Yuri Bashmet, Krzysztof Penderecki, Donald Weilerstein, Ilya Gringolts, and Pacifica Quartet among others. Mr. Kouzov is a founding and active member of the Manhattan Piano Trio, with whom he has toured extensively throughout United States and captured First Prizes at the Plowman and Yellow Springs National Chamber Music Competitions.

In addition to his concert activities, Mr. Kouzov is a devoted teacher. Currently Mr. Kouzov is an Assistant Professor of Cello at the University of Illinois. Prior to this appointment he was on faculty at the Juilliard School and Oberlin Conservatory. Mr. Kouzov holds Bachelors & Masters of Music degrees from the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, and Artist Diploma from the Juilliard School in New York. His principal teachers have included Professors Mark Reizenshtock, Victoria Yagling, Joel Krosnick, and Darrett Adkins.
