Gunning vollendete seine 8. und 9. Symphonie im Februar 2015 bzw. Januar 2016 – ein entscheidender Wendepunkt in seiner symphonischen Entwicklung. Später im Jahr 2016 vollendete er seine einsätzige Symphonie Nr. 10, die er als kreativen Durchbruch betrachtete (Kenneth Woods glaubt, sie für seine beste Symphonie gehalten zu haben). Diese Erfahrung veranlasste ihn zu einer gründlichen Überarbeitung seiner 2. Symphonie (2003), ein Prozess, den er möglicherweise auch auf seine anderen frühen Symphonien ausgedehnt hätte, wenn er noch dazu gelebt hätte.

Doch die 8. und 9. Symphonie bilden ein eigenständiges Paar: Jede ist für ein mittelgroßes Orchester komponiert (die 8. hat nur eine Trompete und keine tiefen Blechbläser, während die 9. eine zweite Trompete, eine Harfe und eine kleine Schlagzeuggruppe hinzufügt) und beide setzen sich auf Gunnings höchst individuelle Weise mit dem Erbe der klassischen symphonischen Form auseinander. Die Achte entwickelt sich organisch aus ihrem Anfangsmaterial (das am Ende des Bogens der Sinfonie transformiert wiederkehrt), doch ihre formale Linie ist klassisch. Ein erster Satz in Sonatenform und ein Finale mit Scherzo-Charakter rahmen den zentralen langsamen Satz ein – eine trübe Idylle, gefärbt durch die kontrastierenden Gesänge der Flöte und des Englischhorns.

Die Neunte ist größer angelegt, teilt jedoch mit der Achten eine ähnliche Stimmung – offener Himmel, Vorwärtsbewegung und ein deutlicher, aber sehr persönlicher Hauch von Pastorale. Sie bewegt sich durch einen ersten Satz in Sonatenform, ein spannungsgeladenes, schattiges Scherzo und einen melancholischen langsamen Satz zu einem Finale, dessen energische Rhythmen und schwebende Lyrik zu einem optimistischen (wenn auch unerwarteten) Abschluss führen. Dies ist keine bewusst monumentale Neunte Sinfonie im Sinne Beethovens; Mahler oder Bruckner: Gunnings kreative Energie ließ nie nach, und die Ideen für eine Symphonie schienen ihn schon während der Arbeit an einer anderen zu überfluten. Der Komponist lieferte keine Erklärung – weder biografisch noch anderweitig – für diese beiden Symphonien, die er nie aufgeführt hörte. Aber er drückte den Geist, in dem sie entstanden, sehr deutlich aus: Sicherlich gibt es eine starke Erzählung, [aber] ich denke, mit gewissen Ausnahmen ist Musik nicht dann am besten, wenn sie versucht, konkret zu sein. Sie ist viel besser, wenn sie Emotionen verarbeitet; und zwar allgemeine Emotionen. Ich finde, dieses Stück hat eine starke emotionale Note, aber wenn man versucht, die Geschichte zu entwirren, landet man bei seiner eigenen Geschichte – und das finde ich absolut perfekt.

Hailed by Gramophone as a 'symphonic conductor of stature', conductor, cellist, composer and author Kenneth Woods has worked with the National Symphony Orchestra (USA), Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia and English Chamber Orchestra. He has also appeared on the stages of some of the world’s leading music festivals, including Aspen, Scotia and Lucerne. In 2013, he took up a new position as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the English Symphony Orchestra. In 2015 he became the second Artistic Director of the Colorado MahlerFest, the only American organization other than the New York Philharmonic to receive the Gold Medal of the International Gustav Mahler Society.

Woods was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra of the Swan in 2010 and during his tenure lifted that orchestra to a new level of international renown. With them, he recorded the first complete cycle of the symphonies of Hans Gál paired with those of Robert Schumann, among the most widely praised classical recording projects in recent years, highlighted in National Public Radio’s ‘All Things Considered’, Performance Today, BBC Radio 3, the Sunday New York Times, the Sunday Telegraph, Washington Post and was an ‘Editor’s Choice’ in Gramophone. Among his other recordings are Schoenberg’s chamber ensemble versions of Das Lied von der Erde and Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (for Somm) by Gustav Mahler, which won the coveted IRR Outstanding rosette from International Record Review, and Spring Sounds, Spring Seas, a MusicWeb ‘Record of the Year’. His recordings with the English Symphony Orchestra and English String Orchestra include the Elgar Piano Quintet as orchestrated by Donald Fraser, and the complete piano concertos of Ernst Krenek, a Sunday Times ‘Best of 2016’.

A widely read writer and frequent broadcaster, Woods’ blog, A View from the Podium, is one of the 25 most popular classical blogs in the world. He has spoken on Mahler on NPR’s ‘All Things Considered’ and BBC Radio 4’s ‘Today Programme’ and is a frequent commentator on BBC Radio 3.

Christopher Gunning
has composed twelve symphonies, as well as concertos for the piano, violin, cello, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, and guitar; many of these have now been recorded. He has also composed many scores for films and television dramas, including Agatha Christie’s Poirot, La Vie en Rose, Middlemarch, Cold Lazarus, Rebecca, Under Suspicion, Firelight, The Big Battalions, Wild Africa, When the Whales Came and Porterhouse Blue. With a career spanning 50 years, he has won 4 BAFTA and 3 Ivor Novello Awards, and BASCA’s prestigious Gold Badge Award.

Christopher studied composition with Edmund Rubbra and Sir Richard Rodney Bennett at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. After a hugely successful career writing for the big and small screen he is now focussed on his classical work and releases.
