In Lorna Windsors und William Hancoxs inspirierender neuer Sammlung englischer Lieder wechseln sich bekannte Lieder und Gedichte mit Uraufführungen (mit Gesang und Klavier) zweier Liederzyklen von Carey Blyton und einer dritten späten Gruppe ab. In dem Liederzyklus Lachrymae (in memoriam John Dowland) und in den beiden Gruppen von Lyrics - Vertonungen von Gedichten aus der antiken östlichen Welt von Griechenland bis China - erkunden Windsor und Hancox Blytons ausdrucksstarke Kontraste und idiomatische Feinheiten, die dem Publikum bisher kaum bekannt waren. Peter Warlocks Lieder wechseln auf rätselhafte Weise von Gefühl zu ausdrucksstarker Schönheit, zu Witz und Skurrilität, während Arnold Bax' ein Lied eine freudige Hymne auf die lang erwartete Rückkehr des Sommers nach Worten von Chaucer ist. Die von E.J. Moeran ausgewählten Gedichte von James Joyce bringen den Charme, den Zauber und das Leid der jungen Liebe im natürlichen Zyklus der Jahreszeiten perfekt zum Ausdruck, und John Mitchells Bright Clouds vertonte Verse des Kriegsdichters Edward Thomas, die sich hier mit Beobachtungen der Natur und des Landlebens befassen. Peter Thompson hat das berühmte Liebesgedicht A red, red rose von Robert Burns neu vertont, und daneben gibt es ein Lied, das Zeilen aus dem halb verspielten, halb bitteren Swinburne-Gedicht A Match verwendet. Bei diesem Album von Komponisten der jüngeren Vergangenheit und der Gegenwart fällt auf, dass die gesamte Musik tonal ist und den Experimentierphasen verschiedener Schulen und Tendenzen widerstanden hat, wobei sie diese Tendenzen überlebte, während sie immer nach Abwechslung innerhalb des tonalen Systems, der Chromatik und sogar der Bitonalität suchte. Durch die traditionell idiomatische volkstümliche oder elisabethanische Harmonisierung oder durch neuere Schattierungen des späten neunzehnten oder frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, sogar durch impressionistische Kolorierung, die in die musikalische Sprache dieser Komponisten eingewoben ist und sie bereichert, lebt die Tradition des englischen Liedes weiter und blüht zur Freude der Interpreten und Zuhörer auf.

Lorna Windsor
Once a piano and viola student, then trained at the Guildhall School, London, as a Lieder and opera singer, Lorna Windsor has performed in many major theatres and festivals. She has sung Salieri with Frans Bruggen, and Bach directed by Gustav Leonhardt, and has recorded Les Motets de Versailles by Blanchard.

She performed Monteverdi in Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Mantova, and the title rôle in Peri’s Euridice at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris; her Mozart rôles include those of Venus in Mozart’s Ascanio in Alba, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni at Glyndebourne, Despina in Così fan tutte directed by Claudio Abbado, and in the Strehler production (Piccolo Teatro di Milano) performed in Rome, Beijing, St Petersburg and Moscow.

Her Lieder repertoire, following the tradition of her teacher, Hans Hotter, is vast and varied, and she is a well-known interpreter in the field of experimental contemporary music and theatre, the recipient of frequent dedications from today’s composers, combining theatrical experience and poetical insight with vocal and technical versatility.
