Info zu Tempesta di mare (Live)

Jerome Correas and Les Paladins invite you to listen to this new disc on b.records where you travel to the court of Mantua when Vivaldi was composing the Concerto da Camera. The works that make up the Tempesta di Mare are extremely virtuoso and expressive and were written at the time in the composers career when he explored timbres and rhythms resulting in an explosion of colour. To consumer without moderation!

A lover of original and even extravagant instrumentations, Antonio Vivaldi always liked to explore the specific colours and dynamics of the instruments for which he wrote. His stay at the court of Mantua from 1718 onwards enabled him to meet a group of particularly virtuoso soloists for whom he created a new genre, that of the "concerto da camera".

Neither a concerto for soloist and orchestra, nor a sonata, this new form of concerto without orchestra is an innovative dialogue between instruments - woodwinds or strings - treated as equals.

Flute, oboe, violin, bassoon, cello and continuo instruments mix their timbres and express themselves together or separately. The dialogue often turns into a sonic joust with frenzied virtuosity in the allegros, giving way to the simplicity of popular melodies in certain slow movements full of poetry. Some of these works can be found elsewhere in Vivaldi's oeuvre, reworked into solo concertos, motet arias or opera arias. More strangely, one sometimes thinks one recognises melodies or rhythmic motifs in works by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Imagine this small team of virtuoso musicians waiting impatiently each day for the new concerto composed by Vivaldi to be played. It is this spirit of play and improvisation that we want to rediscover with these jubilant works that are too rarely played.

Les Paladins
Jérôme Correas, harpsichord, musical direction

Les Paladins
is a vocal and instrumental baroque orchestra founded and directed by Jérôme Correas. Ever since 2001, Jérôme Correas and Les Paladins have explored the dramatic music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, from Monteverdi to Mozart.

Jérôme Correas, who trained as both singer and harpsichordist, has developed an innovative artistic approach based on the theatricality of the voice and the relationship between music and the performing arts. He favours an interpretative approach not only based on the score but also on the search of expressive and theatrical freedoms related to the language and its rhythms, as well as a deep work on the rubato, on the improvisation, both in the lyrical and religious repertoires.

Staged productions by les paladins have included: L’Incoronazione di Poppea and Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria sua (directed by christophe rauck), Cavalli’s l’Ormindo and Monteverdi’s Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (directed by Dan Jemmett), Grétry’s opéra-comique La Fausse Magie (directed by Vincent Tavernier), Rameau’s Les Indes Galantes (directed by Constance Larrieu), Viva España (with the choreographer Ana Yepes), Handel’s Amadigi (directed by Bernard Lévy), the first modern performances of Clapisson’s opéra-comique about slavery Le Code Noir (directed by Jean-Pierre Baro) Their last creation ORFEO 5063 (created in January 2022), is a collaboration with the visual artist and videographer Guillaume Marmin around Monteverdi’s music. In 2023, les Paladins will invite on stage choreographer and contemporary dancer Ambra Senatore, for Café Libertà a lyrical and danced performance around Bach’s and Bernier’s coffee cantatas.

The ensemble has also given concerts at numerous festivals in Europe, the United States and Japan, introducing audiences to unknown works from the baroque era. Les Paladins are also involved in cultural mediation and the professional training of young singers and instrumentalists. They participate in numerous educational projects with the venues where Les Paladins are in residence.

Les Paladins have recorded a dozen albums. Following Cavalli's L'Ormindo (Pan Classics) and Le triomphe de l'amour (Naive), Enchantresses (released in January 2022 by Alpha Classics) is the fourth album of their privileged collaboration with soprano Sandrine Piau. In September 2022, Tempesta di Mare will be released, a live album recorded by B Records around Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto da Camera. The concert Exsultate, Jubilate! with Karine Deshayes will be recorded in October 2022 with the label Aparté (release in 2023).
