Info zu Piazzolla 4 Buenos Aires

Canada’s foremost bandonéonist Denis Plante presents transcriptions of Ástor Piazzolla’s seminal works for bandonéon and guitar. Following the success of his award-winning ATMA album Tango Boréal, Plante’s new recording is a return to the very essence of tango: just his bandonéon and David Jacques’s guitar.

His unique approach to performance and to composition has made him one of the leading exponents of the bandoneon in Canada, as well as a respected figure on the world stage of contemporary tango. His previous album Tango Boréal won the 2012 Opus prize in the category of Disc of the Year, World Music.

„Bandonéonist Denis Plante is already a dominant presence in the world’s contemporary tango scene, and this new recording further cements that dominance. Plante’s arrangements are striking as well as faithful to the very essence of the tango spirit, and he works wonderfully together with guitarist David Jacques. As a result you cannot help but be immersed in this glorious music from beginning to end“. (Kate Rockstrom)

Denis Plante
plays the bandoneon, one of the famous double A varieties, the very same as that played by Astor Piazzolla. The demands this instrument presents for composers and performers makes him the essential tango artist in Canada and a unique face in the world of contemporary tango. Plante is an impassioned musician whose vibrant interpretations allure large audiences. The critics agree: “the subtlety of his playing captures the essence of tango” "Sweet, exquisitely agile, the instrument’s latent melancholy cuts to the heart" and “keep everybody one the edge”. Denis Plante enjoys an international reputation and is frequently invited to perform in Canada, the United States and South America.

Denis Plante grew up in a rich musical universe, surrounded by his father’s collection of ancient instruments. As a youth, he accompanied his parents (founders of Ensemble Claude-Gervaise) on their tours across Canada and Europe.

After receiving classical training on the oboe he obtained a degree in Jazz performance and arranging from Concordia University. At the end of its studies, he formed the Tangovivo Quartet, which recorded his first compositions for the bandoneon. He was quickly noticed by Quartango, the award winning Canadian quartet, and he was invited to join them. In 2000, after a tour to Brazil, he recorded his first album with Quartango. This recording won an Opus Prize (world music) and was nominated for a JUNO.

As a soloist with Quartango, he has played with symphony orchestras in Canada, Turkey and the United States, presenting the Argentine tango within a traditional musical framework. He has received several awards and nominations, including an Opus (world music) for "Esprit" and another Opus (best concert) for "Bach to Tango". The four concerts he gave with Quartango and the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal resulted in a record audience of more than 60,000 people. As a soloist, he has been invited to collaborate on various musical events and festivals. In particular with Gilles Vigneault for "Au bout de coeur", with Angele Dubeau for "La fête du violon" and Andre Gagnon with whom he recorded "Histoire rêvées" (Felix Award for instrumental album of the year), with Diane Dufresne and Yannick Nézet-Séguin for "Kurtweil" and then Luc Plamondon, André Gagnon and Rene Claude for the CD "Entre le ciel et la terre".

In 2004, Denis Plante founded Flores of Nacar, a label specializing in the production of recordings and events focusing on contemporary tango. He asked Noémi Roots-Gaudreault, the violonist of Quartango, to develop a new repertory of impressionist tango music for bandonion and string quartet. Together, they have recorded two consecutive discs for this instrumentation: "Cantos of bandoneon", an Opus finalist (world music) and "Coffee Tango", released in December.

David Jacques
was born in 1978 in Saint-Georges, Quebec, Canada. He is completing in 2007 a Doctorate in music performance at the Univerity of Montreal. He also has a Master in performance from Laval University, a First Prize in guitar, a Prize with high distinction in chamber music from the Quebec Conservatory of music and a Bachelor in music teaching from Laval University. Moreover, he has studied jazz guitar at the same University.

Many times a finalist and semi-finalist in international and national competitions, he has won many of them. He received grants and sponsorships from many organisms and associations. Since 2002, he has played with many many anciant music groups like Anonymus, Caprice, Bande Montrea Baroque, Les Voix humaines, les voix Baroques, Stadacone, Musica Divina, etc. He has published many arrangements for guitar for Les Productions d'OZ. He recorded more than 16 CDs with major labels like XXI-21, Universal records, Analakta and Atma Classique, not to talk about the dozens of smaller contributions in other productions. He gave classical concerts in USA, France, Poland, Austria, Bosnia, Croatia, Mexico, Chile, Vietnam, Brazil, Argentina, India, Nepal, Taiwan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, New-Zealand, Australia and Canada. With such success, he was invited to give concerts for many well-known names like the President of USA, the Prime minister of Canada and for 4 Prime ministers of Quebec.

Between 1995 and 2007, he gave not less than 2000 musical representations in a variety of styles. Many of these concerts were broadcast by the national radio and television of several countries. As a soloist or continuo player, he performs regularly with different orchestras like Quebec Symphony Orchestra, Montreal Symphony Orchestra and many others. His large repertoire encompasses early music, classical as well as jazz and popular styles.

As a pedagogue, he is sharing his knowledge in private lessons and master classes for many years and is teaching at the Ste-Foy's College since 2005. In 2002, he created the company Productiosn DJ and works restlessly to promote the classical guitar at loca, national and international level.
