The clarinetist Patrick Messina and the pianist Fabrizio Chiovetta invite us to a journey through Schumann's poetic universe, from romance to fantasy and to tale. What better way to convey the inexpressible imagination of a composer who never choses between sounds and words than the intimacy of chamber music and the mellow timbre of the clarinet ? The disc features works that pull the auditor into Robert Schumann's productive years and a transcription made by the artists for the clarinet, the indeal autumnal and lyrical instrument. A duo with the viola player Pierre Lenert enhances the expressive palette of the disc. Besides, they don't forget Clara Schumann whose inspiration happens to communicate with Robert's in this beautiful chamber music program.

Patrick Messina
is well known to orchestras and audiences as one of the leading clarinetists of our times. In 2003 Patrick Messina became Principal Clarinet of the Orchestre National de France under Kurt Masur’s direction.

From 1996 to 2003, Patrick has worked with the Metropolitan Opera in New York under the baton of James Levine, Valery Gergiev, Leonard Slatkin and he is regularly invited as guest Principal clarinetist with some of the best orchestra in the world, like the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Kurt Masur, Bernard Haitink and others.

A frequent soloist with major orchestras, Patrick Messina has performed with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre de Cannes, the “Philharmonie der Nationen”, the Orchestre National d’Ile de France, the Orchestre de Chambre de Toulouse, the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the Kioi Sinfonietta (Tokyo) and the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine under the direction of Riccardo Muti, Trevor Pinnock, Bernard Haitink, Yehudi Menuhin, Tan Dun, Daniele Gatti, Sascha Goetzel, Anton Nanut, Kristjan Jarvi, Jaap Van Zweden, Sascha Goetzel, and John Axelrod.

An avid chamber music player, Messina has made regular international appearances with renowned artist such as Edita Gruberova, Chen Reiss, Daniel Hope, Bruno Giuranna, Ida Bieler, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Fabrizio Chiovetta, Simone Dinnerstein, Nina Tichman, Katia et Marielle Labeque, Gautier Capuçon, and some of the greatest string quartets, the Philharmonia Quartett Berlin (Berlin Philharmonic), the Vogler, Parker, Diotima, Parisii, Debussy, Elysées and Fine Arts.

He has played in some of the most prestigious Festivals like: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Gstaad, Spoleto, Schleswig-Holstein, Savannah, Mitte Europa, Pablo Casals, Istanbul, Menton, Wissembourg, Berlioz.

Patrick Messina is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards. In 1992, he became a laureate of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation. In 1996 he won 1st Prize of the East and West International Auditions in New York and the Ima Hogg National Competition in Houston. In 1998 he was 1st prize at the Heida Hermanns International Competition.

Aged only 18, he was the first prize winner in both the chamber music and clarinet division at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris.

Born in Nice, France, of Sicilian and Spanish parents, Mr. Messina began taking lessons with his father, and continued his studies with Guy Deplus, Michel Arrignon at the Paris Conservatory, Franklin Cohen at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Ricardo Morales in New York’s Mannes College.

In 2010, Patrick Messina premieres the Clarinet Concerto "Autumn Pictures" from the French-Lebanese composer Bechara El Khoury at the Chatelet Theatre with the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, conducted by Olari Elts (CD Naxos, 2014).

Also in that same year, Patrick Messina was appointed Visiting Professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 2012, Messina released his critically acclaim Mozart CD with Riccardo Muti, the Orchestre National de France and the Philharmonia Quartet Berlin (Harmonia Mundi distr.) described as " A total success... Most recently, Patrick was appointed Professor at the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris and at the IESM (Institut d'Enseignement Supérieur de la Musique) in Aix en Provence, France.

Fabrizio Chiovetta
studied the piano and music theory at the Superior Conservatory of Geneva, his hometown. He obtained piano and writing diplomas in as well as the City of Geneva’s Adolphe Neumann Prize, an award bestowed upon particularly distinguished artists. He pursued his education with Dominique Weber at the Tibor Varga Academy in Sion until he obtained his Soloist Diploma in 2003 with the highest level of distinction. He has regularly worked with John Perry, Marc Durand and Paul Badura-Skoda - notably on the classical Viennese repertoire on original instruments - and has participated in the Master Classes of Gyorgy Sebok, Julian Martin, Yoheved Kaplinsky and Irwin Gage for the Lied. Recipient of the Göhner Foundation scholarship in 1999, he received the Audience Award at the Klaviersommer Festival (Cochem, Germany) in 2001 for his interpretation of Mozart. He has won the New Talents (Genoa, 2002) and the Orpheus (Zurich, 2003) competitions and has received the Honorary Mention Award of the Seventh International Web Concert Hall (USA, 2005). Fabrizio Chiovetta regularly gives concerts across Europe, North America, the Middle East ans Asia both in recitals and chamber music. His performing partners have included Henri Demarquette, Katia Trabé, Roman Trekel, Julian Bliss, Nicolas Gourbeix, Brigitte Fournier and Gérard Wyss. He has notably played under the direction of Gabor Takacs-Nagy and Ovidiu Balan and has accompanied Lady Jeanne’s and Sir James Galway’s Master Classes. His recordings include works from Honegger, Schumann and Schubert. His Schumann recording received the « 5 Diapasons » Award and Fanfare Magazine described his Waldszenen as « one of the best ever silver-disc'd ». A Haydn CD will be released in 2014. Talented in improvisation, he performs with ensemble Piano Seven and with diverse musicians such as Anna Prucnal, Masako Hayashi, Levon and Gregoire Maret.

Pierre Lenert
Viola Solo from the Paris National Opera Orchestra, Pierre Lenert is also laureate of the Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition, Lionel Tertis, Maurice Vieux and the Autumn Festival of Young Interpreters.

Pierre Lenert is the only violist in Europe to have taken up the challenge to record the « 24 Caprices » of Niccolo Paganini in the viola version, since the integral made by Emmanuel Vardi in 1965 at Label Epic.

He is also Professor at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris.

Soloist and chamber musician, he is the guest of many international festivals such as BBC Proms, Schubertiades, Khumo, Gubio and the Marlboro festival.

His discography includes the complete work of Henry Vieuxtemps's viola and piano work, as well as several recitals devoted to the music of Carl Reinecke, Niccolo Paganini and Felix Mendelssohn, Georges Enesco, Jean Françaix and Darius Milhaud.

Pierre Lenert is Artistic Director of the International Chamber Music Festival « SERENADE » as well as the Festival « LE GOUT DE LA MUSIQUE ».

By directing the Collection for Viola of Artchipel Music Publishing, as well as the Viola Music Collection of Livma Music Editions, Pierre Lenert enriches the repertoire of his instrument by discovering and rediscovering works originally written or transcribed for the viola.

Pierre Lenert plays the viola of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume of 1865, « Comte Cheremetiev ».
