It was only natural that Jordi Savall record Händel’s Messiah. His ‘Watermusic’ is already considered a benchmark and he has also signed countless landmark recordings of religious music.

Le Concert des Nations
Das Orchester Le Concert des Nations wurde von Jordi Savall und Montserrat Figueras im Jahr 1989 gegründet, als sie das Projekt Canticum Beatae Virgine von M.A. Charpentier vorbereiteten. So konnte man über ein Orchester mit Instrumenten der Epoche verfügen, das dazu in der Lage war, ein Repertoire zu interpretieren, das vom Barock zur Romantik reichte (1600–1850). Der Name ist von dem Werk von François Couperin, Les Nations, inspiriert, ein Konzept, das die Vereinigung musikalischer Geschmäcker und die Vorahnung repräsentiert, dass die Kunst in Europa immer eine eigene Prägung haben sollte, die des Zeitalters der Aufklärung. Das von Jordi Savall dirigierte Orchester Le Concert des Nationswar das erste Orchester, das hauptsächlich aus Musikern aus lateinischen und lateinamerikanischen Ländern (Spanien, Lateinamerika, Frankreich, Italien, Portugal usw.) bestand. Und alle diese Musiker waren herausragende internationale Spezialisten in der Interpretation der Alten Musik mit Originalinstrumenten der Epoche und nach historischen Kriterien.

Von Anfang an zeigte Le Concert des Nations den Willen, ein historisches Repertoire von hoher Qualität zu spielen und bekannt zu machen, indem man die Werke streng nach dem ursprünglichen Geist interpretierte, aber doch mit dem Willen, ihnen wieder Leben zu verleihen. Gute Beispiele dafür sind die ersten Aufnahmen von Charpentier, J. S. Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Händel, Marais, Arriaga, Beethoven, Purcell, Dumanoir… und später auch die Werke, die von dem Plattenlabel Alia Vox aufgenommen wurden, von Lully, Biber, J.S. Bach, Boccherini, Rameau und Vivaldi.

Die Wirkung der ausgewählten Werke und Komponisten, der Aufnahmen und der Konzerte in den wichtigsten Städten und auf den wichtigsten Musikfestivals der Welt hat gezeigt, dass es sich um eines der besten Orchester mit alten Instrumenten handelt, das dazu in der Lage ist, ein eklektisches und vielfältiges Repertoire zu interpretieren, das von den ersten Orchesterwerken (L’Orchestre de Louis XIII, 1600-1650) bis zu den Meisterwerken der Romantik und des Klassizismus reicht.

Im Jahr 1992 spielte Le Concert des Nations erstmals eine Oper, nämlich das Werk Una Cosa Rara von Martín i Soler. Dieses Genre wurde später mit der Aufführung des L’Orfeo von Monteverdi fortgesetzt, uraufgeführt im Jahr 1993 und erneut in den Jahren 1999, 2001 und 2002 im Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, im Gran Teatro Real in Madrid, in Beaune, Wien und Metz. Im Jahr 1995 führte das Orchester in Montpellier eine weitere Oper von Martín i Soler auf, Il Burbero di Buon Cuore, und im Jahr 2000 Celos aun del Ayre matan von Juan Hidalgo i Calderón de la Barca, die in Konzertversion in Barcelona und Wien gezeigt wurden. Andere Opernproduktionen sind Farnace von Vivaldi, uraufgeführt im Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid (2001) und auf CD herausgegeben, die erwähnte Oper Orfeo, die schließlich 2002 vom BBC/Opus Arte auf DVD aufgenommen wurde, ebenso wie Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze von F. J. Haydn in Koproduktion zwischen Element Productionsund Alia Vox (2007).
