Info zu Songs/Revolving
After releasing an EP No Vacancy, here is the first album of Stuffed Foxes, a band composed of six childhood friends from Tours. We can say that they knew how to surround themselves since the album is produced, recorded and mixed by Thomas Poli (Dominique A, Laetitia Shériff) and mastered at Black Box studio by Peter Deimel (Chokebore).
Their music is powerful and soaring at the same time with a large psychedelic influence but also a touch of noise or shoegaze. We are in the lineage of Lysistrata for the solidity and The Psychotic Monks for the psychedelic trip side and Slift for the marriage of the two.
The opening track "Sabotage" is impressive of mastery with a song that arrives only after several minutes leaving all the space to the density of their music. And this intensity, we find it the seven titles composing the album because even if sometimes, we can hear some touches of synth ("Luke Glanton") or cellos (on the very simple "Track 6"), what makes the indisputable success of the disc is its coherence. This allows not to lose the listener, as it can be the case sometimes in psychedelic music.
The titles are composed of layers and sub-layers which give to the whole an impression of great sound richness (3 guitars anyway) without tipping over into the indigestible pudding.
You will have understood it, Stuffed Foxes is the first big slap of the year. A revelation.
Stuffed Foxes
Stuffed Foxes
Six twentysomethings from Tours - including 3 guitarists! -who rock in the psyche/shoegaze and the noisy attacks stretched until the abandonment. Abandonment of postures and conventions. Abandonment of the body when the emotion does not know how to give of the head any more and that the foot leaves the wire of these dented rhythms.
Six childhood friends and a code name ("stuffed foxes") that smells like a trip on acid... What to explain under-layers and multiple doors of entries. The melodies, also, which get lost in the echoes and send back in the ropes (electrified).
A 1st EP, No Vacancy, with its vinyl version. And already an obviousness: that of the fulgurance, the trompe-l'oeil and the absence of fear in front of the instrumental. We must admit that if the lyrics are rare, it is to better emphasize the musicality, confirmed with their 1st LP Songs/Revolving.
An album produced, recorded and mixed by Thomas Poli (Dominique A, Laetitia Shériff, Montgomery...); mastered at Black Box studio by Peter Deimel (Shellac, Chokebore, H-Burns, ...); then released jointly by Yotanka (Puts Marie, BRNS, Ropoporose...) and Reverse Tapes (Mystère, T.F.T., Opac...). There is worse name dropping.
What to find there ? An inspired drumming, playing false starts before exploding in the introductive "Sabotage" (and a voice - height of audacity - intervening only in the middle of the track). Just the opposite of "Luke Glanton" and its ghostly chorus, like Ryan Gosling's character in the movie The Place Beyond The Pines which inspired the name...
And everywhere details: the guitars which sing the drum breaks on "No SoundDrive" and its final all in tomes; the cyclothymic variations of tempos on "Oh Lord, It Came To Me"; the cello steps in the background of "Track 6"; this 80s nocturnal trip with "First Affront"; or this final "Extended" exceeding... 10 min.!
"Songs written to be played loud" says the back cover? More than a return to the instinctive, the music of the Stuffed Foxes - dense, nervous and which knows how to spare its effects - only incites to the intensity... That of the moment which takes all its direction on stage. And which, within the square of the French rock relief (Lysistrata, SLIFT and The Psychotics Monks), found what to enlarge the circle. Without cheating.
