Info zu Sketchbook of Dreams

The Hague-based saxophonist Tom van der Zaal has won several prestigious awards such as the Prinses Christina Concours and shared the stage with international names such as Roy Hargrove, Gary Bartz, Vincent Herring, Willie Jones III, Greg Hutchinson and many others. In addition, in 2019, he released his debut album "Introducing Tom van der Zaal - Time Will Tell", which features renowned New York guitarist Peter Bernstein.

Tom van der Zaal is praised for his expressive and lyrical "alt-sax sound'' and approaches his playing like a vocalist. When given carte blanche to launch a new project, Tom did not hesitate for a moment and followed his droomeen collaboration between jazz quartet and string ensemble under the name ''Sketchbook of Dreams'' with crossover influences from both classical, jazz and Brazilian music. Influences from composers such as Stravinsky, Ravel, the romanticism of Mahler and Brazilian legend Jobim are clearly recognisable on the album Sketchbook of Dreams.

The music is best described as: lyrical, romantic, melancholic, intense, accessible, cinematic, rooted in tradition and always in search of a collective sound and forward motion. Sketchbook of Dreams is a musical world tour that focuses on Tom van der Zaal's identity as a saxophonist, composer and arranger.
