10th Anniversary edition: If you look it up in your dictionary, you’ll find that “getting down to brass tacks” means to get down to some sort of serious business. But for NRBQ—in general, and specifically on this outstanding album from 2014—it means getting down to the business of making unique, memorable music while also having some serious fun. The record starts out with the slamming beat from drummer Conrad Choucroun, featured on the most fun song “Waitin’ on My Sweetie Pie” from guitarist Scott Ligon. He also wrote one of the most touching songs, “It’ll Be Alright.” It is also the debut of the new bassist and 2 songwriter, Casey McDonough. He wrote and sang two of the best and most popular songs in recent years. They are “Fightin’ Back” and “Can’t Wait to Kiss You.” A hell of a debut! Brass Tacks features some of Terry Adams’ most inventive works both musically and lyrically in the band’s long history. “Greetings From Delaware,” “This Flat Tire,” and “Places Far Away.” This album also includes “Getting To Know You” from the classic musical, The King And I by Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Amerikanische Rock-Band, gegründet 1967 in Miami, Florida. Der volle Name der Band lautet New Rhythm and Blues Quartet bzw. Quintet. Das NRBQ deckte eine breite Palette an Rockmusik zwischen Rockabilly, Beatles-Pop und Jazz ab.

Auf dem ersten Album "NRBQ" (Columbia, 1989) bestand die Gruppe aus Frank Gadler (vcl, perc), Steve Ferguson (g, vcl), Terry Adams (key, harmonica, recorder, vcl), Jody St. Nicholas alias Joey Spampinato (e-b) und G.T. bzw. Tom Staley (dm).

In drei der 14 Songs war Donn Adams (tb) zu hören. Die selben Musiker sowie Carl Perkins (vcl, g) als Gast spielten die zweite LP "Boppin' The Blues" (Columbia, 1970) ein. Auf dem dritten Album "Scraps" (Kama Sutra, 1972) war mit Al Anderson ein neuer Gitarrist an der Arbeit.

Im selben Jahr erschien mit "Workshop" (Kama Sutra, 1972) ein weiteres Album, das die Band mit Bläsern zeigte. Ab 1974 bestand der Kern des NRBQ fest aus Terry Adams (key, p, org, vcl), Al Anderson (g, vcl), Joey Spampinato (e-b) und Tom Ardolino (dm). Dazu wurden für Aufnahmen und/oder Auftritte meist Bläser beigezogen.

Bis 1994 entstanden auf diese Weise an die 15 weitere Alben. Auch in den zehn Jahren danach folgten mit einem leicht veränderten Lineup über zehn Alben. Am 30. April und 1. Mai 2004 feierte die Band im Calvin Theater in Northampton, Massachusetts, ihre 35-jähriges Jubiläum mit Konzerten.

Dabei machten auch frühere NRBQ-Mitglieder mit. Ab Ende 2004 legte die Band eine Pause ein, da Terry Adams an Kehlkopfkrebs erkrankt war. Adams Gesundheitszustand besserte sich schnell, so dass er mit der japanischen Rockabilly-Gruppe Hot Shots auf Tournee ging.

Auch die anderen Bandmitglieder waren in Projekte ausserhalb des NRBQ involviert. Von der NRBQ erschienen im Laufe der Jahre auch mehrere Compilations. 2011 kam es dann zu einer Reformation des NRBQ und mit "Keep This Love Goin'" (Clang!, 2011) zu einem neuen NRBQ-Album.

Seither kamen mehr als ein halbes Dutzend weitere Alben heraus. Inzwischen beläuft sich die Zahl der Alben der Band auf rund 40. Dazu kamen knapp ein Dutzend Compilations oder Reissue-Pakete. Mit fünf CDs am umfangreichsten war "High Noon - A 50-Year Retrospective" (Omnivore, 2016).
