"Haydn’s 104 symphonies are all fantastic, original, full of incredible fantasy, and careful work brings out the true radicalism of this writing," explained Douglas Boyd, a formidable pioneer. Commissioned in 1785 by the Count of Ogny for the prestigious Concert of the Parisian Olympic Lodge, Symphony n° 87 is one of six so-called “Parisian” symphonies that Haydn composed far from Paris, in the Hungarian Palace of Esterháza (which however is proud of a sumptuous French garden). It was there too that he composed Il Mondo della Luna, an opera-bouffe inspired by Goldoni. Later, the Symphonie concertante belongs to the master's London period and will be celebrated by a dazzled critic from its premiere across the Channel.

Douglas Boyd
Considered one of the most dynamic and exhilarating contemporary conductors, Douglas Boyd is currently Artistic Director of Garsington Opera and Music Director of L’Orchestre de Chambre de Paris. In recent years he has held the positions of Chief Conductor of the Musikkollegium Winterthur, Music Director of Manchester Camerata, Principal Guest Conductor of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Artistic Partner of St Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Principal Guest Conductor of City of London Sinfonia.

Under Mr. Boyd’s artistic leadership, Garsington Opera has been nominated by the International Opera Awards as Outstanding Festival. Summer 2019 he will conduct Mozart’s Don Giovanni and has been instrumental in securing partnerships with the prestigious Philharmonia (with whom he made his debut at Festival Hall in spring 2019) and the English Concert to be orchestras-in-residence at Garsington. He will take his Garsington Don Giovanni production to the Theatre de Champs-Elysees in Paris in September with his own L’Orchestre de Chambre de Paris.

At the helm of L’Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, Mr. Boyd has performed in Paris and on tour with such soloists as Emmanuel Pahud, Alisa Weilerstein, Andras Schiff, Viktoria Mullova, and Jonathan Biss. Boyd most recently recorded with cellist Gautier Capuçon and L’Orchestre de Chambre de Paris on the Erato label.

Boyd’s recording of the Bach Concerti for Deutsche Grammophon marked his recording debut as director/soloist, and he has since gone on to build an extensive discography. His recordings as a conductor with Manchester Camerata of the complete Beethoven symphonies and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 (Avie) and Das Lied von der Erde have received universal critical acclaim. He has also recorded Schubert symphonies with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra on their own label as well as several recordings with Musikkollegium Winterthur.

Upcoming North American performances include debuts with the Virginia Symphony, Sacramento Philharmonic, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, and a return to the Colorado Symphony. Boyd returns to Australia and New Zealand in the Fall 2019, and was scheduled to conduct Mozart’s beloved Requiem at the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris in November - a performance that will be rescheduled. His return to the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine in December precedes his Beethoven project with the Orchestre National de Lyon and subsequent return to the BBC Philharmonic.

Born in Glasgow, Boyd studied oboe with Janet Craxton at the Royal Academy of Music in London and with Maurice Bourgue in Paris. A founding member – and principal oboist – of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe until 2002, Boyd enjoyed a stellar career as a noted oboist until he stopped playing to concentrate completely on conducting.

More than forty years after it was founded, the Orchestre de chambre de Paris is considered one of Europe’s foremost chamber orchestras. Through a period of major renewal in recent years, it is incorporating a new generation of French musicians that have made it the youngest permanent orchestra in Île-de-France and the first French orchestra to achieve true gender parity.

The orchestra performs throughout Greater Paris with concerts at the Philharmonie, where it is a resident ensemble, at Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Théâtre du Châtelet, MC93, as well as other venues in proximity to the metropolitan population, in addition to developing numerous international tours. As a musical actor engaged in its city, the orchestra has developed a civic approach that aims to reach all segments of the population, including persons in situations of precarity or social exclusion—as brilliantly illustrated by the recent musical projects created with the beneficiaries of emergency shelters in Paris or inmates of the Meaux-Chauconin correctional facility.

After five years of remarkable work with Douglas Boyd, the Orchestre de chambre de Paris has welcomed its new musical director, internationally renowned conductor and pianist Lars Vogt. Under his direction, it is pursuing and strengthening its unique artistic approach and firm commitment to chamber music.

For the 2020/2021 season, the orchestra will collaborate with an artistic team made up of Marzena Diakun, the first female guest conductor, artist-in-residence violinist Christian Tetzlaff and composer Clara Olivares. It is working with conductors Trevor Pinock, Douglas Boyd, Thomas Dausgaard, Antonio Méndez, Maxime Pascal and soloists Emmanuel Pahud, Thibaut Garcia, Anne Gastinel, Gautier Capuçon, great voices like Jodie Devos, Adèle Charvet, Christoph and Julian Prégardien, Karine Deshayes and it spotlights playing and conducting at the same time with Martin Frost and Avi Avital.
