Thomas Hampson
Long recognized as one of the most innovative musicians of our time, American baritone Thomas Hampson has received countless international honours for his singular artistry and cultural leadership. His operatic repertoire is comprised of more than 80 roles, and his discography includes more than 170 albums, with multiple nominations and winners of the GRAMMY Award, Edison Award, and the Grand Prix du Disque.

Highlights of Thomas Hampson’s 2022/2023 season on the concert stage include a gala concert with Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Fabio Luisi and mezzo-soprano Susan Graham. He also sings Mahler songs with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Belgian National Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lyon and MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig with whom he also tours to the Philharmonie Berlin and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, in addition to playing a vital role in the Mahler Festival Leipzig. Hampson also reunites with bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni for their acclaimed “No Tenors Allowed” program with the Würth Philharmoniker.

Chamber music projects see Hampson perform in the opening season concert with the New Century Chamber Orchestra and Daniel Hope. He will appear in recital at Turku Music Festival with Vlad Iftinca and in the Muziekgebouw, Amsterdam, Mozart-Saal, Stuttgart and Schloss Elmau with Wolfram Rieger. He also sings Schumann’s Dichterliebe at the KKL Luzern with Martha Argerich.

Later in the season, Hampson will return to Opéra national de Paris for his greatly anticipated role debut as Richard Nixon in Adams’ Nixon in China, led by Gustavo Dudamel.

Last season, he created the role of Jan Vermeer in the world premiere of Stefan Wirth’s Girl with a Pearl Earring at Opernhaus Zürich and starred as Don Alfonso in Mozart’s Così fan tutte at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Hampson returned to the Teatro Real de Madrid and traveled to the Festival Castell de Peralada to star in the title role of Rufus Wainwright’s Hadrian. On the concert stage, he joined the Oslo Philharmonic and cellist Sol Gabetta for a concert led by Klaus Mäkelä, Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, Klangforum Wien, and Prague Symphony, among others. His recital performances included organ recitals with Martin Haselböck at the Dresdner Philharmonie, with Christian Schmitt at Tonhalle Zürich, and a recital with Wolfram Rieger at Alte Kirche Boswil.

Hampson is an honorary professor of Philosophy at the University of Heidelberg and an honorary member of London’s Royal Academy of Music. In addition to several Honorary Doctorates, he is a Kammersänger of the Wiener Staatsoper and Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the Republic of France. In 2017 he received the Hugo Wolf Medal, together with Wolfram Rieger. Hampson is the co-Founder and Artistic Director of the Lied Academy Heidelberg. Further teaching commitments include returning for the fourth edition of Opernwerkstatt Waiblingen with Melanie Diener. In 2003, he founded the Hampsong Foundation, through which he uses the art of song to promote intercultural dialogue and understanding. His international master class schedule is a continuing online resource of Medici.tv, the Manhattan School of Music, and The Hampsong Foundation livestream channel.

Sunhae Im
Called “a splendidly bright soprano” (The New York Times) and “one of the great singers of our time” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung), the Korean soprano Sunhae Im has been showing versatile musicality and deep dramaturgic understanding. She had great success in early music repertoire with conductors such as René Jacobs, Philippe Herreweghe, Fabio Biondi, Ton Koopman, and Diego Fasolis, with ensembles such as Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Europa Galante, and Akademie für alte Musik Berlin. She was also acclaimed for later repertoire with Manfred Honeck, Iván Fischer, Myung-Whun Chung, Kent Nagano, and Zubin Mehta, at Verbier Festival, Carnegie Hall, Philharmonie de Paris, and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. She enjoys innovative projects including The Creation by La Fura dels Baus and La Finta Giardiniera in La Scala Opera’s Shanghai tour. She will join the world premiere of Songs of Nature, a staged Handel project touring from Amsterdam to Asia and the U.S. in 2021. Sunhae made about 30 recordings, including operas by Handel and Mozart and both passions by Bach, and received numerous awards. Her solo album Orfeo[s] was awarded the Elly Ameling Prize by Académie du Disque Lyrique, and her CD Didone Abbandonata was nominated in three categories for Opus Klassik 2020.

Tomasz Konieczny
was born in 1972 in Lodz/Poland, where he first studied acting at the Film, TV and Theatre Academy. He made his debut in a film directed by Oscar prize winning director Andrzej Wajda The Ring with the Eagle, following which he worked as actor / director in many TV Film and Theatre productions in Poland. It was at that time that he began his vocal studies at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy in Warsaw, after which he went to Dresden where he joined the class of Prof. Christian Elßner at the Hochschule für Musik. In 1998 he won the 33rd Dvorak International Vocal Competition in Carlsbad. In 1997 he made his debut singing FIGARO in Le nozze di Figaro at the Poznan Opera in Poland, followed by engagements in places such as Leipzig, St. Gallen, Chemnitz and Mannheim. In 2002 he joined the ensemble of the National Theater Mannheim where he sang many roles included OREST, PIMEN, KING MARKE, AMFORTAS, WOTAN, PIZARRO, JOCHANAAN and the GRAN’ INQUISITORE in Don Carlo. In 2004 Mannheim bestowed upon him the Arnold-Petersen-Award, a special prize for outstanding young talents. 2006 – 2014 Tomasz Konieczny was a member of the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf/Duisburg where he could add to his repertoire some important leading roles like WOTAN, OSMIN, GOLAUD in Pelleas et Mélisande, KURWENAL, HOLLÄNDER, BARAK, BALSTRODE in Peter Grimes SELIM in Il Turco in Italia FALSTAFF and ESCAMILLIO.

He has been a regular guest at the Opera Festival “Budapest Wagner Days”, Where he sang under the baton of Adam Fischer AMFORTAS in 2006, WOTAN in Die Walküre in 2007 as well as in 2009, KURWENAL in 2010 and 2011, WANDERER in 2010 and 2016. In 2008 he made his debut at the Semperoper Dresden where he sang a highly-acclaimed ALBERICH in both Das Rheingold and Siegfried under Peter Schneider. In the same year he appeared for the first time at the Teatro Real Madrid where he sang DR KOLENATY in Janacek’s Case Macropoulos.

In 2010 he made his debut with a sensational success as ALBERICH at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. In 2011 he sang AMFORTAS at the National Theater of Prague (Narodni Divadlo). In 2011 he made also his debut as BITEROLF in Tannhäuser at Opéra National de Paris and came back 2017 as TELRAMUND in Lohengrin (Kaufmann/Pappe). 2012 debut as PIZARRO with NSO Washington and with the same part at the Bayerische Staatsoper München. The big success was his debut at the Salzburger Festspiele (summer 2012) as STOLZIUS in Soldaten of Zimmermann and especially the role of JUPITER in Die Liebe der Danae of Strauss (summer 2016). 2014 he made his very successfully debut at the Carnegie Hall as JOCHANAAN in Salome. Very spectacular was his debut as WOZZECK in Wozzeck of Berg at the Lyric Opera of Chicago Nov. 2015. 2017 he made his debut at the Teatro alla Scala as COMMENDATORE and the same year at the Canadian Opera Company as MANDRYKA in Arabella. January 2018 he made his debut at the Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse as WOTAN in Die Walküre and im March 2018 at the New National Theatre Tokyo as DEVIL in Hoffmann Tales. Sommer 2018 he makes 3 debuts as TELRAMUND in Lohengrin at Bayreuther Festspiele (Opening Evening 2018), as FATHER in Hänsel and Gretel at Edinburgh International Festival 2018 and the recital with Winterreise of Schubert to Stanislaw Baranczak´s poetry at Festival Chopin and his Europe 2018 as the release of the new cd album. March 2019 Konieczny made the stunning debut at the Metropolitan Opera New York as Alberich in Rheingold. Anthony Tommasini (The New York Times) wrote: “„The standout member of the cast was Tomasz Konieczny, a powerhouse bass, in a breakthrough Met debut as Alberich. I tend to prefer portrayals that bring out Alberich’s suffering and bitterness; with a big, penetrating voice that can slice through the orchestra, Mr. Konieczny made Alberich sneering and dangerous.”

Stephanie Houtzeel
An ensemble member of the Vienna State Opera since 2010, mezzo‐soprano STEPHANIE HOUTZEEL has been winning accolades for her opera and concert performances around the world.

Acclaimed for her performances of Handel, Mozart and Strauss, she has sung Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier at the Vienna State Opera, the Opéra Bastille, the Kennedy Center (in a gala performance with Renée Fleming and Christoph Eschenbach), in the innaugural performance of this work at the New Israeli Opera, at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Graz Opera and at the Royal Opera of Copenhagen. Her appearances as the young cavalier have been heralded as “vocally, dramatically and physically sublime” (Opera News) and “capable of effortless vocal power as well as the finest dynamic shadings."

She was nominated one of the best up-and-coming singers by OPERNWELT Magazine for her performance of the Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos (under Philippe Jordan) and has gone on to sing this role in Vienna, Zurich, Tokyo, Cologne, Tel Aviv and Antwerp. She has been fortunate to sing these roles under the musical direction of the late Sir Jeffrey Tate, Franz Welser-Möst, Fabio Luisi, Adam Fischer and Marek Janowski.

Recent seasons have brought Stephanie Houtzeel noted success as a Handel interpreter, in particular the title role in Serse, at the Komische Oper Berlin, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein and at the Oper Graz, which earned her a nomination for the Austrian Music Theatre prize. 2019 featured her in the title role of Ariodante at the Vienna State Opera, under the baton of Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques, which garnered high praise from both the Viennese public and press.

Stephanie’s tenure at the Staatsoper has also included the roles of Dorabella, Jenny Hill, Nicklausse, Prince Orlofsky, Varvara, Kreusa in Reimann’s Medea, Siébel and Getrud (Hänsel und Gretel). She created the role of Miranda in the Vienna world premiere of Adès’ The Tempest as well as La Haine in Vienna’s first staged performance of Armide.

Further engagements spanning Monteverdi to Ligeti, Jommelli to Berlioz, Purcell to Massenet, have taken her to the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals, the Semperoper Dresden, New York City Opera, Opéra de Lyon, the Royal Danish Opera, Theater an der Wien, Opéra National du Rhin, the New Israeli Opera, Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlos Lisbon and the Opéra de Rennes.

Stephanie Houtzeel has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras and ensembles including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Orchestre de la Monnaie, the Bruckner Orchestra, Collegium Vocale Gent, Musicians from Marlboro and Great Performers of Lincoln Center. She has collaborated among others with conductors Valery Gergiev, Jaap van Zweden, Christoph Eschenbach, Adam Fischer, Dennis Russell Davies, Philippe Jordan, Phillippe Herreweghe and Teodor Currentzis.

Ms. Houtzeel’s recordings include her recent Lieder album Nostalgia with pianist Charles Spencer, highlighted by Gramophone Magazine as “beautifully judged” and “utterly beguiling.” She recorded the title role in Lully’s Armide for Naxos and the title role in von Suppé’s Fatinitza. She also appears as the alto soloist in Mozart’s Requiem under Teodor Currentzis.

Stephanie Houtzeel was born in Kassel, Germany and grew up near Boston. She studied Political Science and French at Middlebury College before embarking on her vocal studies at New England Conservatory and at The Juilliard School. She was the first recipient of Juilliard’s Vocal Arts Debut Award as well as a Laureate at the International Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition.
