Info for Albinoni: Per diletto, Suonate a tre trattenimenti armonici & Sinfonia a 4

Tomaso Albinoni, like both Alessandro and Benedetto Marcello and a number of active Venetian musicians, was a dilettante di musica – namely, someone who never entered the employment of any patron or institution. He was able to pursue music as a full-time career and described himself more simply as “musico di violino”. With authoritative booklet notes written by Professor Michael Talbot, this recording by Harmonia Urbis – which is a Roman ensemble collaborating with leading specialists in baroque music – provides an excellent introduction to Albinoni’s chamber music output through a selection of his most beautiful sonatas chosen from the Trattenimenti armonici per camera a violino, violone e cembalo, Op. 6, and his Suonate a tre, Op. 1. The sonatas of Op. 6 belong to the distinctive tradition of chamber sonatas that have no overt connection with the dance. In fact their form is the same as that of the so-called Sonate da chiesa. The trio sonatas of Op. 1 mark the Albinoni’s début in instrumental music. In these earlier relatively early works he was obviously under the strong influence of Corelli, who must at least have known about the younger man through roundabout connections.
