Info for Moving

The Amsterdam-based Oorkaan Ensemble bring explosions of colour and dramatic musical flair to the stage thanks to their unique instrument combination of harp, bass clarinet, bayan and percussion.

The Oorkaan Ensemble musicians are all about embracing bold and thrilling musical adventures. They’re not only pushing the boundaries of what music has to offer with their arrangements of classical masterpieces and the array of original compositions penned just for them, they also explore the repertoire of diverse musical cultures. Their staged concerts, Whoop Whoop(s)! (2021) and Gong and the Four Noses (2023) delve into the worlds of Turkish and Indonesian classical repertoire. The results can be heard on their acclaimed debut album Shimmering Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant on Shimmering: "The colours burst from their very first recording! [...] Sliding, scraping, drumming, and clattering, they create fascinating blends of sounds." – Jenny Camilleri

Since their founding in 2021, the Oorkaan Ensemble has performed staged concerts in various Dutch and European concert halls, including the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Concertgebouw Brugge, Konzerthaus Wien, Bozar Brussels, Philharmonie Haarlem, Brucknerhaus Linz, Philharmonie Luxembourg, and at festivals such as Wonderfeel, Grachtenfestival Amsterdam, and Gent Festival van Vlaanderen. The ensemble was selected by an international jury from Classical:NEXT to perform a showcase in Berlin in May 2024 and in September 2024, they will make their debut in the small hall of the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam.
