Info for Two Marimbas in Berlin
With Two Marimbas in Berlin, award-winning duo DoubleBeats presents world premiere recordings of four pinnacles of the keyboard repertoire and two modern classics in their own remarkable arrangements for marimbas and percussion. Soft, resonant tones and high drama emerge through the duo’s exceptional dexterity and control in works by Chopin and Rachmaninov, as well as in Bach’s iconic Goldberg Variations. Haydn’s lighthearted Variations contrast with the thrills of Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango, and the album finishes with Minoru Miki’s poignant Marimba Spiritual.

DoubleBeats
Founded in 2012 by Ni Fan (China) and Lukas Böhm (Deutschland) during their studies at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin, the DoubleBeats percussion duo has established itself rapidly on the international concert scene.
The duo made its domestic début with Jacob ter Veldhuis’ Goldrush Concerto under the direction of Sean Edwards at the Konzerthaus in Berlin and its international début at the International Percussion Ensemble Week in Croatia. At the International Mercedes-Benz Music Festival in China, they were named Young Artists of the Year 2012.
Since then, regular concert tours and guest professorships have seen them travel Europe and Asia widely.
In 2018, DoubleBeats won first prize and two special awards at the OSAKA International Music Competition in Japan and first prize at the Universal Marimba Competition in Belgium the previous year. They were awarded the Ritter prize by the Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation for “exceptional achievement in the field of interpretation”.
The duo performs music both old and new. Their repertoire ranges from Bach to Piazzolla to Bartok, and includes numerous adaptations and commissions for both traditional and modern instruments.
A beneficiary of Yehudi Menuhin’s Live Music Now scheme, DoubleBeats is active in the field of music outreach in social institutions. They are supplied by Yamaha and Sabian Cymbals in their role as official endorsers.
Since the summer semester of 2019, DoubleBeats has been teaching at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin.
