Info for R. Schumann: Symphony No. 1, Op. 38 "Spring" - Schubert: Symphony No. 3, D. 200 (Live)

Mariss Jansons conducts two works by two important Romantic composers: Robert Schumann's 1st Symphony in B flat major, the so-called "Spring Symphony", and Franz Schubert's 3rd Symphony in D major. The recordings date from 2015 (Schubert) and 2018 (Schumann).

Two orchestral works can be heard on the new BR Klassik album with which their authors, the two later important Romantic composers Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann, tried their hand as symphonists: In his Third Symphony in D major D 200, composed in the early summer of 1815 and presumably performed at a concert for amateurs, the eighteen-year-old Schubert emancipated himself from the stylistic copies of his First and Second Symphonies and found his own musical expression. However, none of his symphonies were to receive a public performance during his lifetime; the third was only presented in London in 1881 and was immediately enthusiastically received. Schumann's First Symphony in B flat major op. 38 (based on an unfinished youthful symphony) was a great success for the 31-year-old composer: the work was premiered by Felix Mendelssohn at the Leipzig Gewandhaus two months after its completion in January 1841 and was very well received by the audience.

Both works radiate youthful freshness and a profoundly positive attitude: like Robert Schumann's 'Spring Symphony', which was 'born in a fiery hour' in four days, contemporaries could have given Franz Schubert's Third Symphony, which was composed in nine days and lives entirely from dance-like, folk-song-like and effervescent movement, a similar epithet. The excellent recordings with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mariss Jansons are from concerts recorded from January 26 to 30, 2015 (Schubert) and on March 21 and 22, 2018 (Schumann) in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz.
