Info for Name the Color

MANKAI is a new band project by the Berlin-based drummer and composer Max Santner. The collective consists of Dora Osterloh (vocals), Silvan Schmid (trumpet), Simon Jermyn (bass) and Max Santner (drums and composition).

On the new album NAME THE COLOR, spontaneity, creativity and musical interaction merge into an independent band sound. Compactly composed structures, open sound textures, repetitively played melodic patterns and interlocking - overlapping rhythms form the framework for collective improvisation. The focus is always on listening to each other and trying to develop new sound worlds in the process of joint experimentation.

The album title is derived from the Zen saying NAME THE COLOR, BLIND THE EYE. It describes a tendency in our society to concentrate on individual aspects in a complex world and lose sight of larger contexts. To categorize things and look at them separately. As a counterpoint to this, the compositions on the album are inspired by the idea of understanding music as a holistic, connecting element. An attempt to realize oneself creatively and to be as creative as possible, free from pigeonholes and genres.
