Info for Stella Maris

The new album by the RIAS Kammerchor under the direction of Justin Doyle is a musical homage to the Marian devotion of the Renaissance and brings the sacred splendour of this era to life. The moving Missa Ave Maris Stella by Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611), the ‘Spanish Palestrina’, takes centre stage. This artful setting of the famous hymn captures the poetry and depth of Marian devotion, in which Mary is honoured as the ‘Star of the Sea’ and ‘Queen of Heaven’.

The album is complemented by exquisite motets by Victoria and Francisco Guerrero (1528-1599), the celebrated master of Seville. Guerrero's motets, such as O sacrum convivium and Ave virgo sanctissima, combine contrapuntal sophistication with touching expressiveness and impressively convey the sonorous spirituality of this era. An album that revitalises the beauty and power of Marian devotion in the Renaissance with a unique art of sound.
