The new album "Spectrum" by the vision string quartet presents 13 songs composed, arranged and produced by the four young musicians from Berlin themselves. Inspired by folk, pop, rock, funk, minimal and singer-songwriter music, Jakob Encke (violin), Daniel Stoll (violin), Sander Stuart (viola) and Leonard Disselhorst (cello) have embarked on a journey to their very own sound and genre. The result is an unprecedented musical adventure without borders, shaped by personal experiences, new and old encounters as well as subtle impressions from various cultures. They create a whole world of sounds with just their four string instruments – from guitar, ukulele and bass to bongos or a complete drum set.

Since its founding in 2012, the vision string quartet has rapidly risen to the forefront of the international music scene, redefining the possibilities of a modern string quartet. Fusing classical mastery with electrifying originality, these four visionary musicians seamlessly bridge genres—effortlessly navigating between the classical string quartet repertoire and their own compositions that draw inspiration from folk, pop, rock, funk, and minimal music. Their fearless approach and groundbreaking sound have established them as pioneers in the contemporary chamber music landscape.

Breaking Boundaries – From Concert Halls to Bold New Formats

Renowned for their innovative concert experiences, the vision string quartet performs in some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Berlin Philharmonie, and Wigmore Hall London. They are also sought-after performers at major festivals such as the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Bodenseefestival, Beethovenfest Bonn, and the Trondheim Chamber Music Festival. Beyond traditional concert settings, the quartet experiments with unconventional formats, from performances in complete darkness to memorized renditions of classical, romantic, and contemporary works —freeing them to engage more deeply with both their music and their audience. Their dynamic and genre-defying style transcends the boundaries of chamber music, redefining what a string quartet can be.

Chart-Topping Albums & Prestigious Accolades

The vision string quartet first gained international recognition as exclusive recording artists with Warner Classics, releasing their debut album memento and their second album Spectrum. Memento received the Opus Klassik Award for Best Chamber Music Recording in 2020. With Spectrum, the quartet presented music entirely composed and produced by the ensemble, accompanied by self-directed and curated music videos.

After a five-year recording break, the quartet returns with In the Fields, their new album released on ACT Music. Inspired by Béla Bartók, the album interweaves classical works—with folk influences, jazz, and original compositions. Featuring guests including Bernhard Schimpelsberger, Mahan Mirarab, and Joel Lyssarides, this album is a bold statement of the vision string quartet’s genre-crossing creativity and artistic curiosity.

As winners of multiple top-tier competitions, including first prize and all special prizes at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Competition in Berlin and the International Concours de Genève, the quartet has cemented its place among the elite of the chamber music world. Additional accolades include the Chamber Music Prize of the Jürgen Ponto Foundation, the Würth Prize, and the Ritter Prize of the Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation. They honed their craft under the mentorship of the Artemis Quartet at the Berlin University of the Arts, as well as with Günter Pichler of the Alban Berg Quartet at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía in Madrid. Other key mentors include Heime Müller, Eberhardt Feltz, and Gerhard Schulz.

Global Recognition & Exciting Collaborations

Recent highlights include tours to Japan, Australia, and Korea, as well as debut performances at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Grand Concert Hall in Warsaw, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, and the Tonhalle Zürich. In the 2025/26 season, the vision string quartet will be ensemble-in-residence at the Tonhalle Düsseldorf, with a total of eight concerts. The quartet will also perform as soloists with the Orchestra of the National Theatre Mannheim, the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn, and in 2027 with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. The program includes John Adams' string quartet concerto Absolute Jest and the world premiere of a new work for string quartet and orchestra by first violinist Florian Willeitner.
