Info for Korngold: Violin Concerto & String Sextet

Korngold began work on his Violin Concerto in 1937, following his father’s suggestion that the main theme from his score for the Errol Flynn epic Another Dawn would make a good basis for a concerto. The work remained dormant while Korngold was exiled to Hollywood after the Anschluss. He resumed work on it in 1945, and fully revised it. Premiered by Jascha Heifetz in 1947, the Concerto is widely performed and recorded, and is certainly Korngold’s best-known concert work. Widely considered the greatest composer-prodigy since Mozart, Korngold composed the String Sextet in 1914, when he was only seventeen years old. It shows his fully developed style and assured idiomatic writing for the ensemble. Andrew Haveron leads the Sinfonia of London Chamber Ensemble in the Sextet, and is joined by John Wilson and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in the Violin Concerto.

“… This new iteration [Violin Concerto], impeccably played by Andrew Haveron, is notably enhanced by the sympathetic accompaniment of John Wilson and the RTE Concert Orchestra, the latter playing with suitably passionate commitment. The versatile Wilson, of course, has the full measure of Korngold’s serious works along with his influential film scores, and that particular combination of skills services the music very well here. The composer’s String Sextet is a welcome companion piece…” (Barry Forshaw – CDChoice.co.uk)

Haveron studied at the Purcell School and the Royal College of Music. He has performed as a soloist under conductors including Belohlávek, Colin Davis, Norrington, Skrowachewski and John Wilson. His 2015 performance of Walton’s Violin Concerto with the Sydney Symphony Orchestras was nominated for a Helpmann Award. He was leader of the Brodsky Quartet 1999–2007, performing a repertory of some 300 works, including contemporary commissions, and participating in projects with artists including Elvis Costello, Björk, Paul McCartney and Sting. Haveron’s recordings with the quartet won more than fifteen awards, including the Diapason d’Or and Choc du Monde. Haveron has also appeared as a chamber musician with the Nash and Hebrides ensembles, the Logos Chamber Group and Ensemble Q and with Kathy Selby. He has toured Australia in recital with the pianists Anna Goldsworthy, Piers Lane and Simon Tedeschi.

He has also led the Wolrd Orchestra for Peace at the requests of Valery Gergiev and Donald Runnicles, and been leader of the John Wilson Orchestra since its inception. In 2013 Haveron became concert master of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Alongside his duties there he has also recently performed with the London Symphony Orchestra under Rattle. Haveron holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Kent for his services to music. He plays on a 1757 violin made by G.B. Guadagnini, generously on loan to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra from Vicki Olsson for his use.
