Info for VI (EP)
“Why” is the new track from Skinny Living, a four-piece from Wakefield dealing in beautiful, haunting acoustic soul music, drawing on influences such as Bill Withers and Paolo Nutini.
“Why” is the lead track from the forthcoming “6” EP. Skinny Living began in 2013 when guitarist Will Booth was first floored by singer Ryan Johnston’s incredible voice at an open mic night in their hometown of Wakefield, before being augmented by Danny Hepworth (guitar) and Rhys Anderton (drums).
The band are the product of relentless hard work and live shows over the past few years. They have done it the old-fashioned way, building their own fanbase, self-financing trips to the Netherlands and around the UK where they played shows and slept on the floors of friends, all without any outside help, until finally bagging a deal with RCA in 2017. Since then they have worked with a string of top producers including Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran), Mark Ralph (Clean Bandit, Years & Years) and Steve Robson (One Direction).
Their music has an incredible lived-in quality, built on Ryan’s vocal and lyrics that provide a heavy dose of wisdom. “Why” is the perfect example, about Ryan’s incredible bond with his sister. The accompanying video features her along with Ryan and its emotional impact is devastating and an incredibly brave first major label release with Ryan pouring very drop of emotion onto the screen.

First Wakefield, then the world! Meet credible pop 4-piece Skinny Living – they flippin’ love a road trip…
Ryan Johnston (vocals), Will Booth (Right handed guitar & vocals), Danny Hepworth (Left- handed guitar & vocals) & Rhys Anderton (drums, cajon & vocals) – all based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Meet the lads in the video below as they touch down in the Philippines…
Glorious acoustic indie soul – with echoes of Bill Withers, the Isley Brothers and Paolo Nutuni for good measure. Check out the video for “Only I” for a flavour, including a wonderful inspired guitar line Jose Gonzalez would be proud of…
We’ve all been down on our uppers at one time or another and as their name suggests, Skinny Living are no different. Having left home at 19 singer Ryan Johnston embarked on a tour of open mike performances collecting other band members along the way. Things have been on the up over the last few years with the band recently signed to the legendary RCA label home to Nothing But Thieves, Tom Odell & Wolf Alice to name a few. To celebrate the band embarked on the Skinny Living Room Tour.
