Info for Neon Grey Midnight Green
As if cosmically enacted, Neko Case breaks to the surface once again with the new album Neon Grey Midnight Green and reminds listeners that she is one of our greatest living songwriters - perpetually becoming more fearless and adventurous.
The Grammy-nominated iconoclast's ninth album is self-produced and her biggest-sounding and most intimate-feeling release yet. Her first new music this decade, Neon Grey Midnight Green follows 2018's Hell-On, an eclectic piece that The Guardian called "a pitch-perfect roar of female defiance."
Her latest is no less urgent but carries a deep blue streak of sentimentality in its incandescent blaze. The album pays tribute to the musicians, producers, and activists who have passed away in recent years, all artists Neko was lucky enough to call not just influences but close friends.
She rises on the shoulders of her musical heroes, using the tools they lent her to create her most inspired work.
More than any of her past albums, “Neon Grey Midnight Green” was recorded live with a full band – even breaths and shirt-sleeve rustlings were kept in the final mix as a reminder that “humans were here”. The recording primarily took place at Case’s own Vermont studio, Carnassial Sound, with additional sessions in Denver, Colorado with the PlainsSong Chamber Orchestra and in Portland, Oregon with Tucker Martine. “There are so few producers who are women, nonbinary, or trans”, says Case, who identifies as gender fluid and uses she/her pronouns. “People don’t think of us as an option. I’m proud to say I produced this record. It is my vision. It is my veto power. It is my taste”.

Neko Case
is an American singer-songwriter best known for her solo career and as a member of the Canadian indie rock group The New Pornographers.
Case an Alexandria, Virginia native traveled throughout the country when she was young living in Massachusetts, Vermont, Oregon, and Washington though she considers Tacoma, Washington her hometown. Case currently resides in Vermont.
In 1994 Case moved to Vancouver, British Columbia to attend Art and Design school. While there she played drums in several local punk bands and a country music group. While in Vancouver Case recorded vocals for a few songs that ended up on Mass Romantic The New Pornographers debut album. Her lead vocals on songs like “Letter from an Occupant” were straightforward, full volume power-pop performances. Released in 2000 Mass Romantic became a surprise hit. Although originally conceived as a side project for its members The New Pornographers remain a prominent presence in the indie rock world releasing their seventh album Whiteout Conditions in 2017.
In addition to continue to record with The New Pornographers Case frequently collaborates with other Canadian musicians and has recorded material by several noted Canadian songwriters, in particular on her 2001 EP Canadian Amp. As a result Case is considered a significant figure in Canadian music.
On her solo work and collaborations outside The New Pornographers Case has fully embraced country music. Her 1997 album, The Virginian contained originals mixed with covers of songs by Loretta Lynn and other country pioneers. Critics compared Case to honky-tonk singers like Lynn and Patsy Cline. On her second solo album, Furnace Room Lullaby Case introduced “country noir” elements that have defined her subsequent solo career. On this album Case’s vocal style moves away from outright honky-tonk but retains her twang garnering comparisons to Tanya Tucker and Dolly Parton.
Case recorded and toured for several years as Neko Case & Her Boyfriends before performing solo under her own name. She primarily performs her own material but also performs and has recorded cover versions of songs by artists such as My Morning Jacket, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams among others.
Case continues to record and tour with The New Pornographers and sings lead on several songs on every one of their albums. Case’s 2009 album Middle Cyclone debuted at No. 3 on the charts making it her first top ten album in the United States. Case released her first solo album titled Hell-On in five years in 2018.
