Info for In This City They Call You Love

Richard Hawley will release new album ‘In This City They Call You Love’ on May 31st. The Sheffield songwriter is on a roll, with his musical Standing At The Sky’s Edge gaining outstanding reviews. Recently switching to a prominent venue in the West End, the new London run is scheduled for last for six months.

Alongside this, Richard Hawley has been working on a new studio album. A terrific songwriter, ‘In This City They Call You Love’ will land on May 31st, with the artist opting to focus on “voices, the song and space…”

Boasting 12 songs, Richard Hawley releases the album this summer, alongside a busy nationwide tour. Discussing the project, he comments:

“I’ve made three albums where I had the title before I’d even begun to record, where I had an agenda. One was ‘Truelove’s Gutter’. Another was ‘Standing At The Sky’s Edge’ when I wanted to turn everything up and make the music a lot more aggressive, and then this one. I wanted it to be multi-coloured in a way… focusing on the voice and what voices can do together… I deliberately only played a handful of guitar solos to keep it focused on voices, the song and space…”

New single ‘Two For His Heels’ is out now – stately, assured, and novelistic in tone, it plays to his considerable strengths.

Richard Hawley

Richard Hawley
is synonymous with his native city of Sheffield. He has released nine studio albums over the last twenty years, with two being nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. He is also a Brit nominee and received a South Bank Award in 2007. In 2023 he received 2 Olivier Awards for best Musical and best Music for his Musical Standing At The Sky’s Edge which was staged at The National Theatre and The Crucible in Sheffield.

Over the years, Richard has become as well known for his guitar-playing as his singing. He has duetted with Tom Jones, Nancy Sinatra and Shirley Bassey, and played with (amongst many more) Arctic Monkeys, Elbow, Paul Weller, Manic Street Preachers and Pulp, the band he played guitar with for a number of years.

Best known for his mix of classic songwriting, soothing vocals and northern grit realism, Richard is something of a unique artist in British popular music, being able to cross boundaries from one musical style to another whilst keeping intact his own strong identity.

In October 2023 his Very Best of album ‘Now then’ became his 4th top 10 album and received numerous 5/5 reviews in all media.

This album contains no booklet.
