Info for LOKK - Pastoral Music for Oboe
Lokk is the Norwegian greeting for lokkerop som ble brukt av budeier og gjetere. Tradisjonelt praktisert in fjellområder, og selv den dag i dag, ble lokk brukt av gjetere for å nå ut til, tiltrekke og samle husdyr over long avstander. Gjeterne brukte ducks eller et instrument for å samle flokken, og på en måte kan lokk sees på som en musikalsk sjanger. David Friedemann Strunck
grew up in Dortmund in Germany. The potential music lends to express oneself motivated him strongly to become a musician:
I think the experience I had as a young musician to be able to liberate my own creativity and my own musical voice through playing an instrument was one of the most important inspirations to choose a musical path.
He studied music in Detmold and Stuttgart, and has over the years been inspired by many role models amongst his teachers, colleagues, conductors and the musicians he has experienced on stage.
If I have to pick out one of them, it would be my teacher from my studies in Stuttgart, Ingo Goritzki. He was a role model for me as a musician, person and teacher.
Today, David loves to teach himself and teaches students from the acedemy section and from the young talent program of Barratt Due Music Institute.
After his studies, David worked as Principal Oboist in Bochum Symphony Orchestra. He has also been a soloist with several orchestras and is artistic director of Oslo Chamber Academy.
It gives me great pleasure when I'm able to sing through my instrument.
Baroque music has always spoken to me
In 2004 he was engaged as Principal Oboist with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, and he didn’t have to wait long for exciting challenges:
The greatest experience I have had with the orchestra so far has been to perform Alpine Symphony by Richard Strauss in Musikverein in Vienna in the autumn of 2004. I was new in the orchestra and had to jump in for a sick colleague. It was the first time i played in the world’s most magnificent concert hall, and it was my first Alpine Symphony, and I almost had no time to rehearse. André Previn was the Chief Conductor at the time.
The music which lies closest to his heart is to be found a little outside the orchestra’s core repertoire:
We don’t play much of this music, but Baroque music has always spoken to me. I’ve grown to love all kinds of music, but I still enjoy searching for the music’s fundamental, rhetorical expression, which is especially evident in early music.
In January 2016, LAWO Classics will release a CD including Mozart's oboe quartet at oboe concertos by Ketil Hvoslef and Harald Sæverud with the Oslo Philharmonic, conductor Arvid Engegård and with David as soloist.
David loves Norwegian nature, and when he isn’t playing, he loves walking. He also enjoys skiing in the winter.
