Info for Reflections
The Confringo Piano Quartet, winners of the Hans Gál Prize and fellows of the 2024 German Music Competition, presents a fascinating dialogue between the familiar and the rediscovered. This compelling program pairs Johannes Brahms’s Third Piano Quartet, a cornerstone of the repertoire, with a rarely heard work by Hans Gál — a composer whose life was deeply shaped by National Socialism and exile. Gál’s composition from the 1920s reflects the openness and vitality of its era, its vivid colors and expressive power unjustly neglected in concert halls today. Together, these works illuminate a powerful conversation between Late Romantic tradition and twentieth-century rediscovery, offering listeners a deeply engaging musical experience.
Confringo Piano Quartet
The Confringo Piano Quartet
is comprised of four young musicians from Germany, South Korea, and Serbia. Its members—Eun Che Kim (violin), Philipp Sussmann (viola), Irena Josifoska (cello), and Viktor Soos (piano)—met during their studies in Berlin and Hannover. After giving several concerts at a chamber music festival, they decided to explore together the vast and diverse repertoire for piano quartet. In addition to the major works of the Classical and Romantic eras, the quartet shares a strong interest in contemporary music.
Individually, each musician has received numerous awards in international competitions and has studied under renowned teachers such as Ulf Wallin, Jens Peter Maintz, Tabea Zimmermann, and Bernd Goetzke. In 2024, the quartet was awarded the Hans Gál Prize—given annually by Villa Musica Rheinland-Pfalz and the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz to an international young ensemble
As scholarship holders of the German Music Competition 2024, they will be performing concerts throughout Germany in the 2025/26 season as part of the concert funding by the German Music Council.
