Info for Freies Geröll
Freies Geröll is the second album by legendary guitarist Joe Sachse with trombonist Nils Wogram. The songs are inspired by Jazz, Blues, frre improvisation and Flamenco. Recorded live to two track analoge tape in a Ballroom from the 50ies.
In a duo, a person reveals himself as if under a magnifying glass. Among musicians, the saying goes: "Play in a duo and I'll tell you who you are".
Nils Wogram has always emphasised how strongly he comes from the jazz tradition - despite all the extensions and ramifications of expression. This can be felt, sometimes more strongly, sometimes more sublimely, in all his groups and playing constellations.
In the dialogue with Joe Sachse, the swinging basic gesture is immanent, also the blues feeling in a very broad sense. This duo and its groove are like a stroke of luck. Helmut 'Joe' Sachse, almost a quarter of a century older than Nils Wogram, grew up in the GDR and had to find his own way to jazz against all odds - from dance and rock music to free playing and on to a distinctive language on the instrument. Nils Wogram has grown into an established jazz scene and has made his own mark both as an instrumentalist and with a whole series of bands that have worked together over the long term. What fascinates Joe about Nils is versality: "He can play anything." And Nils raves about Joe Sachse's self-sufficient musicality: "a very rare, precious commodity".

Nils Wogram
counts as one of the most important jazz musicians in Europe. He appears on many important festivals and tours worldwide with his own bands and as a featured soloist. He is mainly known for his highly virtuous trombone playing, his very original compositions and as a band leader of long-term working bands with a unique ensemble sound.
In 2010 he started his own record label nwog-records on which he releases his albums. Nils Wogram‘s bands play exclusively his own music and other ensembles commission pieces by him.
Born 1972 in Braunschweig, Germany, Nils Wogram started playing the trombone at the age of 15. He started classical and jazz trombone simultaneously. He was a member in the National German Youth Big Band, participated in classical competitions and formed his own bands at the age of 16. From 1992 to 1994 he studied in New York City and continued at Cologne university until 1999 when he graduated. Since then Nils has relased 23 albums as a bandleader. Some of Nils’ teachers were Reinhard Feldmann, Arnie Lawrence, Buster Williams, Steve Turre, Jimmy Knepper, Conrad Herwig, Slide Hampton, Kenny Werner, Maria Schneider, Richie Beirach, Jiggs Whigham and Ed Neumeister.
Helmut "Joe" Sachse
(1948 in Mittweida) comes musically from the East German jazz scene, with whose representatives he played together almost without exception. He has also performed with other international musicians: Carmell Jones, Leo Wright, Mighty Flea Conners, Charlie Mariano, John Tchicai, John Marshall, David Moss, Peter Brötzmann, Tony Oxley, Jack Bruce, Han Bennink and Albert Mangelsdorff.
From the 90s onwards, he began to adopt standards from rock music as well. His characteristic playing style earned him labels such as "Jimi Hendrix of the jazz guitar", "high priest" or "sorcerer" of the electric guitar. The Frankfurter Rundschau finally named him "Germany's greatest unknown guitarist".
