The pianist, keyboardist and composer Bernd Kaftan, who has made a name for himself in his many years as a musician at Cologne's NN Theatre, also has a lot to offer as a soloist, sideman and bandleader.

In 2021, he released his piano solo album ‘rooms and places’, which received widespread acclaim: ‘... A beautiful piece of music ...’ (Jazzthetik); ‘... a work of radiant beauty’ (LP - Magazin für Analoges, HiFi & Vinyl-Kultur) and many more.

With his new album ‘Perspectives’, for which he was able to gather renowned musicians around him, Kaftan once again shows a new facet: full of groove, in an unusual line-up with an extended rhythm section and polyphonic vocals, the album is full of surprising beauty and fresh ideas. Genre boundaries are not even considered, the focus is on a joy of playing that is immediately transferred to the listener. It has a lot to do with jazz, incorporates strong influences from African and Latin American music and could perhaps be described as a rousing, contemporary version of ‘fusion’.

Here you can hear clever arrangements, harmonious and exciting solos, clever lyrics, and all this in compositions that come across as relaxed and whose formal complexity always serves the music. The whole thing sparkles with liveliness, the joy of playing together, expressiveness - which at the same time ensures that the wide stylistic spectrum of the compositions results in a whole of different but equally bright colours.
