Info for Try Harder

The forest. An ecosystem in which the most diverse forms of life interlock in a highly complex way, interacting, reacting to and with each other. A habitat in which rugged beauty and filigree grace occur at the same time. And last but not least, a biotope for little-domesticated creatures.

On a metaphorical excursion into this green habitat, Augsburg bassist Florian Hartz and his trio Flo & Fauna present relaxed, cool, contemporary and simply fat fusion grooves. So the electric bass stands here for the grounding root: sometimes funky, sometimes stoic in repetitive disco patterns, then again thought of in a very vocal way. It grooves mightily in the forest, but remains true to the playing culture of a real piano trio. Pianist Valentin Seidl effortlessly integrates 80s synth sounds or a Rhodes into his playing. The improvisations usually develop from compact song structures, draw fine lyrical lines or pick up on the dynamic impulses that arise from permanent rhythm changes. Jakob Dinnebier on drums organises all this with tremendous precision.

There are some unmistakable references to E.S.T. and The Bad Plus. Nevertheless, the trio convincingly defines its own sound aesthetic, which the young ensemble presents with joy of playing at the highest level.
