Info for Freespace

Lyder Røed is back with new music! Experience the authentic sound of Scandinavian soul music.

Lyder Røed (Fieh, Lyder Røed quintet, Bangkok Lingo, Slow is the new fast etc) has been working on the solo project "Freespace" for some time. This was written as a work for the Orchestra for Jazz Composers in Oslo (Ojkos), and for Røed it has become a large and comprehensive project where he plays with the music and musical references of importance to the composer.

Røed has been a member of the band Fieh for the past seven years. In his solo project "Freespace", he has brought together several members of the band and incorporated elements from Fieh's sonic landscape into his own music. Together with the big band Ojkos, an alternative orchestral pop music emerges. Unlike Røed's previous recordings (Lyder Røed quintet, Bangkok Lingo, Slow is the new fast), here he moves further away from the jazz tradition, mixing elements from different genres that have been important to him. This is a pop record that plays with genres and directions.

The 16-piece band moves seamlessly through Lyder's compositions, and Sofie Tollefsbøl is at the top with her distinctive vocals and lyrics. Producer Lars Hortveth has left his mark on the disc in terms of sound and arrangement, and has been an important contributor.

This release clearly marks where Røed stands as a composer and musician on the Norwegian jazz scene today.

Lyder Øvreas Røed
belongs to a new generation of Norwegian musicians: hard-working, demanding and multi-talented. The trumpeter from Bergen has already played with popular groups such as Fieh and Slow Is The New Fast and is part of the Afrobeat funk band Mosambique, which recently made its debut on Jazzland Recordings.

His quintet's debut, "The Moon Doesn't Drink" - a melodic foray through various types of modern jazz - will be released shortly. Røed's experienced fellow musicians Hanna Paulsberg (saxophone), Eyolf Dale (piano) and Steinar Raknes (double bass) are given plenty of space for soulful solos, while Tore Ljøkelsøy's solid drumming holds the band together with innovative dabs and fills. The leader himself proves to be an extremely smooth soloist on trumpet and flugelhorn, enchanting his listeners with his melodious tone. Last but not least, Lyder Øvreas Røed proves to be a talented songwriter who has the whole range of understated elegance that great jazz musicians such as Brian Blade or Avishai Cohen (trumpet) are currently celebrating.

Lyder Øvreas Røed is an impressive artist whose name should be remembered - despite all the special characters. "The Moon Doesn't Drink" is further clear proof that the latest generation of Norwegian jazz has already found its own voice and is using it to present its messages with great articulation, clarity and power.
