Info for Oddly Even

We are Mikk Kaasik and Marten Männa, and together we form the high-energy jazz-fusion band Some Times. Over the past year, we recorded our debut album, and now it's time to release it!

We met while studying in the rhythm music department at MUBA, and the idea of writing original music together arose when an opportunity came up to participate in the Uno Naissoo Composition Competition. We entered the contest with the track "Oddly Even" and, to our own surprise, won. That moment marked the beginning of Some Times; we realized we loved making music together and wanted to share it with others. In the summer of 2025, we were invited to be the August residents at the jazz club Philly Joe's, a role that required us to perform several concerts. We wrote a lot of new music for these shows, and the album "Oddly Even" was born from those tracks.

We turned the anteroom of Marten’s family sauna into our band’s first "office," spending countless hours there over the last year. In that sauna, we wrote, recorded, produced, listened, deleted, rewrote, and handled everything else involved in making an album. MUBA lent a helping hand for the recording sessions with other musicians, allowing us to record the backing tracks for all the songs in their sound studio. We aren't entirely on our own on this album, however; for the recording, we invited musicians whose work and playing we deeply admire to join us. Performing alongside us on the record are Janno Trump, Aleksander Paal, Jaagup Jürgel, Nikita Korzoun, Allan Järve, Robert Rebane, Uku Konsap, Heikko Remmel, Johannes Kiik, Johannes Laas, Allan Kaljaste, Märten Lehto, and Linda Kanter.

From the very beginning, our dream has been for this album to be more than just a digital file on a streaming platform—something tangible you can actually hold in your hands. If you enjoy our music, now is your chance to help us turn this album into a physical record. Every contribution brings us one step closer to making that dream a reality.

Mikk Kaasik
is a young jazz pianist from Estonia. In August 2024, he released his first album “Take One”, on which he wrote all the songs himself. Mikk Kaasik’s music has been described as “full of life and raw energy”.

Mikk has studied the piano from a young age, but his love for jazz was confirmed at the age of 17, when he started studying at the Eller music school under Jürmo Eespere. From there, this passion has deepened, and even now Kaasik is already writing material for his second album. He considers Cory Wong, Ray Thistlethwaythe, and Winton Kelly to be his biggest role models. Young Estonian jazz pianist and composer Mikk Kaasik received the prestigious Young Jazz Talent Award from the Estonian Jazz Association in 2025. He is known for his energetic and raw sound, combining jazz, fusion and funk.

Marten Männa
is a young drummer and multi-instrumentalist from Tallinn, Estonia, whose musical range spans jazz and fusion, soul-funk, R&B, and pop. Alongside performing, he is actively involved in writing and producing music.

Marten has performed at festivals including Jazzkaar, Tallinn Music Week, and Tudengijazz, as well as at Philly Joe’s Jazz Club in Tallinn. He is a member of original bands such as Some Times and COLDWAVE, and has also performed as part of the backing bands for various Estonian artists. He can also often be found at jam sessions at Philly Joe’s and Terminal.

Marten is drawn to raw energy, emotion, and creativity in music, but for him, a deep sense of groove, solid time, and strong ensemble playing are just as important. He is currently writing new music with various line-ups and becoming an increasingly familiar presence on the Estonian music scene.

This album contains no booklet.
