Info for Membra Jesu nostri

A masterpiece that shows the immense talent of a musician who is fundamental to understanding the evolution of German music throughout the 17th century and, in particular, that of religious music. Music of spiritual edification, music of mystical inspiration - almost an exercise in contemplation or adoration - which, according to the words the composer himself wrote on the cover of the score manuscript, must be sung with the most humble devotion. ("humble Totius Cordis Devotione decantata"). In 1680, Buxtehude composed the cycle entitled Membra Jesu nostri, while Bach was not yet born. It was almost 45 years before he wrote the first of his two known passions, the St John Passion. But with the composition of this score, Buxtehude marked a new era in the repertoire of music related to the Passion of Christ.
