Info for Beethoven: King Stephan, The Ruins of Athens & Leonore Prohaska
Laurence Equilbey's new album features repertoire from her original concert initiative, “Beethoven Wars”, a concept inspired by the parallel themes in manga and opera such as heroism, tragedy, love and loss.
Taking the form of a multimedia animated Manga ‘space opera’, the repertoire draws on lesser-known works by Beethoven - King Stephen, The Ruins of Athens and Leonore Prohaska. While these stage plays are not among the composer's best-known, they bear witness to his tireless creative spirit.
"Assuming the afterlife has restored his hearing, [Beethoven' would hopefully enjoy the gusto and punch of this digital-only album’s romp through his incidental music to King Stephen and The Ruins of Athens...Complete, but out of order, the 49-minute collage of cues is fidgety — many last under a minute. But the album still shows how many stirring and inventive works Beethoven’s incidental music offers." (The Times)
