Das Warten hat ein Ende: Album Nr. 5 des Emil Brandqvist Trios „Entering The Woods“ ist fertig. Die Formation gehört sicher zu den wenigen Piano Trios weltweit, die sich im Verlaufe der letzten Jahre durch die beständige Weiterentwicklung ihres eigenständigen und wiedererkennbaren Bandsounds eine Kontinente umspannende Zuhörerschaft erspielt haben. Mehr als zehn Millionen Streams für einzelne Songs! haben sie in die vorderste Reihe katapultiert, in Nordamerika sind es die ganz zuhörerstarken Playlisten auf denen sie auftauchen, in Japan sind sie auf unzähligen Compilations als Paradebeispiel für skandinavischen Jazz verkoppelt, und in Deutschland erreichte ihr letztes Album die No.3 der Jazzcharts. ECHO Nominierungen und das Erscheinen auf der Longlist der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik waren weitere Indizien für ihre große Akzeptanz und zuletzt begeisterten sie nicht nur auf vollen Clubtourneen sondern auch auf großen deutschen Jazz- und Klassikfestivals wie Movimentos Wolfsburg, Palatia Jazz / Rheinland Pfalz, Elbjazz Hamburg, dem Beethovenfest in Bonn oder Jazz Baltica an der Ostsee. Anlässlich eines Auftritts im Kulturmagazin „Aspekte“ im ZDF kündigte man sie als „die schönsten Blume des Piano Trio Genres“ an.  

Das Geheimnis dieses Trios liegt dabei in der raren Gabe, einen ganz eigenen Sound entwickelt zu haben, der geprägt wird durch die filigranen Klangmalereien von Namensgeber Emil Brandqvist am Schlagzeug und den mal sensibel dahingetupften, mal rasant rollenden Neo-Klassizismen des finnischen Pianisten Tuomas A. Turunen, der unlängst auch ein ausdrucksstarkes Solo-Werk für SKIP veröffentlichte (SKP 9139 „Ornaments Of Time“). Die stoisch treibende Kraft im Kontrabass-Spiel von Max Thornberg verleiht dem Trio dabei einen unverwechselbaren Körper. Wie gewohnt zeichnet für die meisten Kompositionen Emil Brandqvist verantwortlich, aber es ist schon gute Tradition, dass der in Südfrankreich lebende Tuomas A. Turunen auch kompositorisch mitwirkt.

Bereits mit den ersten Noten von „My New Bike“ ist man wieder im EBT Kosmos der getupften Schlagzeugakzente und üppigen Piano Harmonien. In „Unbreakable“, einer Tuomas A. Turunen Komposition, perlen die Noten über dem ebenso voluminösen wie dezenten Bass von Max Thornberg. Klänge, die einen zum Träumen und „Bildern nachspüren“ einladen. Nicht zu überhören ist beim EBT Trio Sound die detailreiche Produktion, mit der es Emil Brandqvist gelingt, das Piano Trio Genre immer wieder mit überraschenden Wendungen zu erweitern: vertrackte Rhythmen wie in „Crowded Apartment“ gehören dabei ebenso zu seinem Instrumentarium wie die Erweiterung durch Gäste wie in „The Woods“, auf dem sich die Akkordeonistin Lisa Langbacka mit melancholischen Momenten zum Trio gesellt. In „Grand Piano“ treibt der Göteborger das Trio mit einem kompromisslosen Schlagzeugspiel voran und setzt mit der Bass Klarinette von Martin Brandqvist und dem Flügelhorn von Johan Asplund atmosphärische Akzente, während „Butterflies“, ein Walzer im typischen EBT – Gewand, die Schmetterlinge förmlich miteinander tanzen lässt. „Hide And Seek“ wiederum klingt wie eine verrückt gewordene Spieluhr, die sich in immer neuen Drehungen voran bewegt und Tuomas A. Turunen Raum für herausfordernde Tonfolgen bietet, die sich über erdige Sounds von Brandqvist und Thornberg legen. „The Clouds Are Clearing“ schließlich klingt dank der zentralen Schlüsselrolle von Max Thornberg, als hätte sich Sting in die Welt des Jazz zurückbegeben, und mit präparierten Pianoklängen, Celesta, gestrichenem Bass und Blasinstrumenten nach einem geradezu filmischen Epos.

The reactions to Emil Brandqvist?s debut album with SKIP in 2013, ?Breathe Out? (SKP 9115), were nothing less than enthusiastic. The recording together with the Sjöströmska String Quartet not only clocked in as CD of the Week at radio broadcasters WDR3 and HR Mikado, it was the Audio Tip for STEREOPLAY magazine. The German periodical Jazzthetik attested to ?an intriguing alternative draft to the general view of what a drummer does.? As for festival and club appearances, though there weren?t many last year he cast a spell that left audiences in a rapt, attentive and even euphoric mood.

One could say that this drummer and composer from Göteborg, Sweden is more an audiophonic painter than ?the guy who sets the beat’. Fearless and persuasively convincing, he has the courage to put the melody first, to live out his folkloric influences from the far north and his penchant for quiet drum-playing. The trio?s line-up equally comprised of Tuomas Turunen, pianist and composer from Finland, and bass-player Max Thornberg from Stockholm, provides copious support. Turunen is a discovery all by himself: Inclined toward the classic vein, his playing is at times cheerfully bubbly, other times reserved, with dabs and dashes. A pianist who knows how to set distinctive accents. Following ?Breathe Out? with its string quartet arrangements, on ?Seascapes? (SKP 9128) Emil Brandqvist has now turned to winds & horns. In his inimitable way he manages to create an atmosphere ranging between levity (for instance on the track ?Silloin lennän? by Turunen), melancholy (on ?Vals?, the opener), spontaneous surprise and magic moments. The album also features Johan Asplund / flugelhorn, Martin Brandqvist / flutes, clarinet and bass clarinet, and Nils Börén / clarinet, all of whom strive to add to ?the big picture’ without soloist allures. The final touches on ?Seascapes? came from Stefano Amerio at the studio ARTE SUONO in Udine, Italy, a world-class audio engineer who most recently put the ?spit & polish’ on a number of albums for ECM, not to mention the last four Tingvall Trio productions for SKIP.

This time the CD is predominantly presented as a trio. For Emil Brandqvist, it’s tracks like ?Vals? that come closest to his ideal of lyrical pieces playfully wrought for a trio. ?Skog? (?the forest’) describes a feel-your-way stroll, the magical ?Du haller min hand? the balance between the tension and happiness of a jaunt to the big city with his child. Encounters with ?Bobergs udde? and ?Grimsholmen?, places where Brandqvist spends the summer, along with thoughts given to ?Den sista isbjörnen? (?the last polar bear’) belong to the widely varying points for listeners to enter the world of Emil Brandqvist.
