Info for Une Question d'Enfant

“Une Question d’Enfant” is the debut album of French guitarist and composer Emma Giulia (aka Emma Feld-Mugnaini). Emma is a 2025 winner of the prestigious Made in New York Jazz Competition. The title of the album is inspired by the book “Une Question d’Enfant” written by French psychoanalyst and philosopher Anne Dufourmantelle. Emma picked up the guitar at the age of 6 (among her heroes then: Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Guy), and when she was 14 Emma discovered jazz (and the likes of Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall and Pat Metheny).

Emma Giulia
(aka Emma Julia Feldhandler-Mugnaini or Emma Feld-Mugnaini) is a French Guitarist and Composer born in Paris in 1999.

She started playing guitar at the age of 6 with blues/rock guitar lessons, her first inspirations were Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Guy.

She started studying Jazz at the age of 14 and learned the language and improvisation by listening to Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall and Pat Metheny.

The discovery of the composer Charles Mingus at the age of 16 was a musical and artistic shock that pushed her to take an interest in arrangement and composition.

At the same time, she listens to diverse and varied music ranging from Brazilian composers (Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Elis Regina) to alternative rock (The Kills, St Vincent, Moodoïd) and French chanson (Rita Mitsouko) which also inspired her in her musical identity.

At the age of 19, she met and studied with Romain Pilon before going to study at the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam from September 2020 to June 2022 where she studied with Jesse Van Ruller, Tineke Postma, Taali and José James, among others.

Since September 2021, she has formed her group with international musicians from the Amsterdam Conservatory; Tijs Klaassen (double bass/Netherlands), Federica Lorusso (piano/Italy), Lucas Santana (flute/Brazil), Chen Har Even (drums/Israel), and Meeliann Kosk (Estonia/Vocals).

In May 2023, she was selected to participate in the WIZZ Mentoring Program created by Anne Paceo, Les Gémeaux, and the Jazz Sous les Pommiers Festival.

This program aims to support young female jazz musicians and composers, with two concerts that happened in October 2024 in France at the Théâtre des Gémeaux in Sceaux and the Théâtre de Coutances in partnership with the Jazz Sous les Pommiers Festival.
