Info for Johann Sebastian Bach: Goldberg Variations

In his arrangement of the Goldberg Variations, guitarist Walter Feybli has endeavoured to stay as close as possible to the original and to combine the pieces harmoniously. He has deliberately chosen those variations whose character is reminiscent of suite movements and which sound as natural on the guitar as if they were originally intended to be played on the piano.

"So the title with which this album is advertised is not quite right. In fact, you can only hear a suite of the Goldberg Variations with the Aria at the beginning and end as well as 8 variations. In his arrangement, guitarist Walter Feybli endeavors to stay as close as possible to the original and to combine the pieces harmoniously. He has deliberately chosen those variations whose character is reminiscent of suite movements and which sound as natural on the guitar as if they were originally intended to be played on the piano.

The Swiss guitarist offers wonderful playing and thus remains very close to the original. This Goldberg Suite is complemented by two Preludes BWV 853 & 858, as well as the Fugue BWV 1000 and the Chaconne BWV 1004, which of course presents a particular challenge.

Here too, Feybli proves to be a masterful interpreter and remains closely connected to Bach’s spirit at every moment. In this sense, this album can be recommended to all those who would like to get to know Bach on an atypical instrument." (pizzicato.lu)

Walter Feybli, classical guitar

Walter Feybli
completed his studies with a teaching and soloist diploma at the Basel Music Academy. Further musical and technical training at various masterclasses took him to France, Italy and Spain. He won first prize at international competitions in Alessandria (1972) and "Fernando Sor" (Palermo/Rome, 1973) and was awarded prizes at the "Concours International d'Execution Musicale" in Geneva (1975) and at the ORTF in Paris (1979). He soon made a name for himself throughout Europe. His international concert career began with a tour of Holland - including at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam - as a soloist, in duos with guitar, flute, cello and voice and as a soloist in orchestral concerts. From 1976 to 2018, he led the training and concert classes at the conservatories in Zurich and Basel. In recent years, he has focussed intensively on the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
