Info for Spirit of the American Range (Live)
From its previous all-England recording, the Oregon Symphony turns to all-American music for its third classical recording under Carlos Kalmar's direction. "Spirit of the American Range" presents three American works from the first half of the 20th century: Aaron Copland's third and final symphony, which includes the noble "Fanfare for the Common Man," Walter Piston's ballet suite from "The Incredible Flutist" and George Antheil's Jazz Symphony.
Copland's Third Symphony is well known because of the bold, uplifting "Fanfare for the Comman Man" section that appears at the beginning of the fourth movement. "Fanfare" has been played at sporting events, to open concerts for the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan, as a wake-up call to astronauts and for Queen Elizabeth's traipsing in and out of parliament. Piston's ballet music and the Antheil symphony, both strong, imaginative works, are less-well known, which is good reason to record them.
The orchestra's two previous classical recordings under Kalmar are the Grammy nominated "Music for a Time of War," the program the orchestra performed at Carnegie Hall in 2011, and 2012's "This England."
The orchestra recorded "Spirit of the American Range" live at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in April 2013 and January, 2014.
