Silenced – Unsung Voices of the 20th Century, featuring tenor Ian Koziara and pianist Bradley Moore, shines a light on art songs by Franz Schreker, Vítězslava Kaprálová, Viktor Ullmann, and Alexander von Zemlinsky, whose musical achievements were overshadowed by the oppression of the Third Reich. This album marks the first tenor-voice recording for almost all of these rare songs.

Described as “an exciting Wagner tenor” (New York Times) and “a wonderful artist” (Washington Post), Chicago native Ian Koziara has performed at leading venues including the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, Glimmerglass, Teatro La Fenice, and Opéra National du Capitole, among others. He sings regularly at Oper Frankfurt, where he recently starred in Franz Schreker’s Der ferne Klang.

Bradley Moore has served as associate Music Director at the Houston Grand Opera and assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera and Salzburg Festival. He has performed as a piano soloist with orchestras including the National Symphony Orchestra and Buffalo Philharmonic, and has collaborated in recital with artists such as Renée Fleming and Susan Graham.

This recording explores the operatic and chromatically rich German harmonies of early 20th-century composers Franz Schreker (1878–1934) and Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871–1942), alongside the esoteric textures of Viktor Ullmann (1898–1944), who wrote his Hölderlin-Lieder and Drei Lieder, Op. 37 during his internment at the Terezin concentration camp.

Vítězslava Káprálová (1915–1940), the least known and shortest-lived composer on the program, was a trailblazer as the first Czech woman to become a professional conductor and the first woman ever to conduct the Czech Philharmonic. Káprálová possessed extraordinary talent and technical virtuosity, and her passion for song and poetry are reflected on this program in sets such as Dvě písně, Op. 4 and Jablko s klína, Op. 10. Tragically, Káprálová’s career was cut short by her untimely death at age 25.

Ian Koziara
was a three-year member of The Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, having worked with such notable conductors as Yannick Nezet-Séguin, Bertrand de Billy, and Marco Armiliato. He debuted at the Metropolitan Opera as Enrique in Thomas Adès’ The Exterminating Angel, with subsequent appearances in Parsifal, Nico Muhly’s Marnie, The Magic Flute, and La Fanciulla del West. Ian’s recent appearance as Fritz in Franz Schreker’s Der Ferne Klang (Oper Frankfurt) was hailed by the Wiesbadener Tagblatt as “so strong as Fritz that one is amazed at how naturally a sense of beauty and despair can go hand in hand”. His performance in the title role of Mozart’s Idomeneo yielded accolades from the Washington Post, praising his “striking beauty of tone… His King was royal and haunted and evoked nothing so much as Benjamin Britten’s Peter Grimes”.

Ian is equally at home on the concert stage as in opera. In Honegger’s Le Roi David with New York’s Voices of Ascension and F. Murray Abraham, Ian was described as “a vigorous, compelling David… using his powerful voice to convey the full range of David’s very human strengths and weaknesses.” His repertoire in non-opera works includes Messiah, The Dream of Gerontius, and Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, among many others.

This season will see Koziara working with Lyric Opera of Chicago and Royal Swedish Opera. He will make his debut as Max in Der Freischütz and Florestan in Fidelio in a European tour with Gustavo Dudamel and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. In the summer, Ian will perform as Arindal in a new Francesca Zambello production of Wagner’s Die Feen, conducted by Glimmerglass Festival Music Director Joe Colaneri.

In his capacity as a member of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, Ian performed many excerpts and acts of important roles from such works as Wagner’s Lohengrin, Berlioz’s Les Troyens, and Verdi’s Stiffelio. Ian is a graduate of Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, and Rice University in Houston, Texas.

Bradley Moore
has appeared in recital with Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Ian Koziara, Ryan Speedo Green, Jamie Barton, Christine Goerke, Angela Meade, Eric Owens, and Eric Cutler, among others. He has been a piano soloist with orchestras including the National Symphony Orchestra and Buffalo Philharmonic. He performed the Martinu Harpsichord Concerto with the San Francisco Ballet for the world premiere of Mark Morris’ Beaux, and has also been heard as a recitative accompanist and continuo player with the Met Orchestra, Wiener Philharmoniker, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Met Chamber Ensemble. His discography includes The House Without A Christmas Tree and a recital with Melody Moore for Pentatone, recitals with Eric Cutler for EMI Classics and clarinetist Julian Bliss on Signum Classics, and a recital of songs by Daron Hagen on Arsis Audio.

Mr. Moore conducted the world premieres of Ricky Ian Gordon’s The House Without a Christmas Tree and Laura Kaminsky’s Some Light Emerges at the Houston Grand Opera, and led the company’s revival of Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince, as well as performances of Tosca, L’elisir d’amore, and The Magic Flute. He conducted Ariadne auf Naxos, Dead Man Walking, The Cunning Little Vixen, and The Crucible at the Miami Music Festival and Madama Butterfly at the Castleton Festival. He has been Associate Music Director at the Houston Grand Opera and assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, Salzburg Festival, Opéra National de Paris, Canadian Opera Company, and Los Angeles Opera.
