For years now, Tim Garland’s playing and composition have less reflected ‘influences’ than styles he has entirely mastered - everything from Celtic music to Yellowjackets fusion, from free improvisation to classical performance, from ECM ‘third stream’ to left-field electroacoustics. As a composer, he uses his native eclecticism and phenomenal technique to make telling and often surprising connections; as a bandleader, he creates spaces in which other musicians will surprise themselves. Songs to the North Sky unites these two strands of his career in one remarkable project. After two years in the making between much international touring and time away from the UK, Garland celebrates ten years of “Lighthouse Music” and a deserved place once again as band leader.

Tim Garland is one of the most versatile musicians in the UK. Celebrating 10 years of his acclaimed and revered Lighthouse Project, this major double album release from Garland sees him further develop his highly original voice with a marriage of diverse influences and unique and varied line-ups.

Bringing together two projects that both compliment and form a distinct relationship with each other, the first disc includes ‘Songs to the North Sky’, (shortlisted for this year’s British Composer Awards) with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, bassist John Patitucci and percussionist Asaf Sirkis. The second disc, a celebratory expansion of his Lighthouse Project, features pianists Geoffrey Keezer, Jason Rebello and John Turville, percussionist Asaf Sirkis and guitarists Ant Law and Don Paterson (who harks right back to Tim’s Lammas days from the early 1990’s).

This major album sees a consolidation of the artistic work marked by his move in 2003 to the North East, within a mile of one of the UK’s most famous Lighthouses, in which some of his most adventurous music was first created. Now based back in London, this album marks a very personal journey covering a period of intense study in composition and orchestration as well as the honing of his own playing, matured by years of touring with Chick Corea.

‘Songs to the North Sky’ is a breath-taking, at times cinematic, set of tunes and variations where a 30 piece string orchestra is far from being padding. The music on the Lighthouse ensemble disc is probably his most vibrant ever, at times a romp with friends going back over two decades.

The result is a landmark album that marks Garland’s ongoing flowering as a saxophone player and composer, taking key elements of instrumentation and interaction from the previous 3 releases of Lighthouse material.

It is a huge privilege for Edition to be able to work with this unique musician on such a vital release in undoubtedly one of the most creative periods of his career so far. This is the next chapter for Tim Garland and for Lighthouse. With a new home at Edition as well as his continued involvement as Chick Corea’s regular saxophonist and now writing collaborator, this is an exciting new phase in his musical career that will take him to new heights and obtain a status in the international scene that only a few British musicians have achieved.

Tim Garland
was born in 1966, studied composition at the Guildhall School under Robert Saxton and changed first study to saxophone half way through his course.

He has won a series of BBC awards for band leading and composition between 1989 and 2006.

In 2008 he won a Grammy for his orchestrations of Chick Corea's music on "The New Crystal Silence" and continues to be Chick's saxophone player touring the jazz scene internationally.

He was Research Fellow at Newcastle University between 2004 and 2008 and has been a visiting proffessor at the Royal Academy Of Music for over a decade.

Garlands ensembles have often consisted of innovative line-ups, he has been the inspiration between "Acoustic Triangle", "Storms'Nocturnes" "The Underground Orchestra" and his continuing project "Lighthouse" which was formed in 2004.

He is married with two children and shares his time between London and the North East of England.

Tim is one of the most versatile musicians in the UK. He won a Grammy for his orchestrations of the Chick Corea CD "The New Crystal Silence", which he helped produce at the Sydney Opera House, and is accepting commissions as composer and arranger from several of the worlds leading orchestras.

He has won several BBC awards for his small ensemble projects and delights in fusing together differing musical disciplines. Particularly familiar with the worlds of contemporary orchestral and jazz music, Tim is also adept in creating music in the studio using electronic and pre-recorded material.

His skills extend to writing lyrics, many of which are evident on this site, and he has formed lasting relationships with several internationally renowned musicians, often working onstage alongside them.

Tim is a founder shareholder with Audio Network and has written for the RPO, the LSO, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Northern Sinfonia, Westminster Abbey Choir and many other ensembles that are drawn to his eclectic vision. He likes to refer to his wide-ranging output as a ‘Diverse Unity’.
