The "musical feast" prepared for us here by the ensemble of the same name led by bassoonist Clemens Schlemmer and his colleagues Anne Schumann and Petra Burmann is as entertaining as it is nutritious and as instructive as it is delicious.

At the centre of the action is the more or less nebulous figure of the Spanish Augustinian monk Bartolomeo de Selma y Salaverde, who was born towards the end of the 16th century and died around 1638 far from home - more precisely: in Poland, where he had come via the stations of Innsbruck and Venice. And not on a spiritual mission, but as a composer and excellent musician who evidently excelled in his use of the bassoon instruments of the time. Not least with the dulcian, which Clemens Schlemmer handles excellently in this production: the one-piece "dugout" among the bassoons exudes a peculiarly mild, enchanting, sometimes almost "saxophonesque" aura that one could listen to for hours.

Especially when the delicate, clear tones of a baroque violin and the unique foundations of the huge theorbo are mixed into the proceedings; the result is truly an exquisite "feast". Of course, this does not only benefit the pious brother from Madrid: as if to mark his musical path, his canzonas and sonatas are accompanied by similar works by the Venetians Giovanni Battista Fontana (1589-1630) and Dario Castello (1602-1631) and their Polish colleague Adam Jarzębski (around 1560-1649). Harmonious, but by no means monotonous, as we realise after five quarters of an hour ...

Musicalische Schlemmerey:
Anne Schumann, baroque violin
Clemens Schlemmer, dulcian
Petra Burmann, chitarrone

Musicalische Schlemmerey
was founded in 2011 as a result of joint projects in very different productions. The main aim of the three musicians Anne Schumann, Clemens Schlemmer and Petra Burmann is to rediscover the diversity of the small-scale gems of early Baroque chamber music, to bring out the richness of colour and to serve these delicacies to audiences again today. Mixing the ingredients of violin, dulcian and theorbo, the sounds elicited from the various instruments by bowing, blowing and plucking and thus creating a new flavour, is the special challenge, and the fun of enjoying the listening result is not neglected.
