Info for Schubert: Die Schöne Müllerin

Baritone Konstantin Krimmel, voted ‘Best Newcomer’ of the year at the 2023 Oper! Awards in Germany and a member of the eminent Bavarian State Opera company since 2021, presents his third recording for Alpha Classics. In close partnership with pianist Daniel Heide, he places his artistry and his feeling for words at the service of the lied repertory. This is also an opportunity to discover his vision of the work, an unexpectedly contemporary, socio-psychological analysis: ‘Die schöne Müllerin is a work that romanticises the development of a mental illness, and shows, unfiltered, how a young person can feel without a tempered emotional world. With all its dark sides.’

Konstantin Krimmel, baritone
Daniel Heide, piano

Konstantin Krimmel
of German-Romanian origin, received his first musical training with the St. George's Choir Boys in Ulm. At the age of 21, he began his vocal studies with Prof. Teru Yoshihara, which the singer completed with distinction in 2020. Since then, he has been coached by Tobias Truniger in Munich.

Whilst still being a student, during his studies Konstantin Krimmel developed a special love for the concert and lied repertoire, which he quickly expanded. He has since won numerous competitions, including the 2019 German Music Competition as well as 1st prize at the International Helmut Deutsch Lied Competition, 2nd prize at the International Singing Competition 'Das Lied' in Heidelberg and the Gian Battista Viotti International Music Competition.

Consequently, the artist has already appeared nationally and internationally, including recitals at the Kölner Philharmonie, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as well as at the Konzerthaus Berlin, at the Oper Frankfurt, at the Heidelberger Frühling, at the Schubertíada de Vilabertran as well as the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg, in Madrid, London (Wigmore Hall) and at the Oxford Lieder Festival. In the 21/22 season, he will perform in Strasbourg, Nuremberg and Hohenems, among others.

Attractive projects likewise await him in the oratorio field: in summer 2021, Brahms Requiem conducted by Raphael Pichon (together with Sabine Devieilhe, soprano) in Bordeaux, in December an extensive tour (Christmas Oratorio by J.S.Bach) with the Nederlands Kamerkoor conducted by P. Dijkstra and, at Easter 2022, concerts with Bach's St. Matthew Passion under Ph.Herreweghe.

In the field of opera, Konstantin Krimmel is about to open a whole new chapter: in autumn 2021, he will become a member of the Bavarian State Opera. Next season, he is going to appear in Strauss' 'Ariadne auf Naxos' (Harlequin), in Britten's 'Peter Grimes' (Ned Keene) and in 'Thomas' (Matthias) by Georg Friedrich Haas, with the leading Mozart roles in particular awaiting him in the coming years.

In 2019, the artist has signed an exclusive contract with French label Alpha, and a recording of Handel's 'Brockes Passion' (together with the Ensemble Arcangelo under Jonathan Cohen) has just been released. His first Lied CD entitled 'Saga' (songs and ballads by Loewe, Schumann, Schubert, Adolf Jensen) was highly celebrated: "at only 26 years of age, he already possesses an interpretive depth and a technical sovereignty and does not need to fear comparison with great Lied singers of his vocal fach." Thilo Braun, Deutschlandfunk.

Daniel Heide

He performs inconcert series and festivals throughout Europe and Asia, including in the concert halls of Vienna, Berlin and Dortmund, London’s Wigmore Hall, at the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg/Hohenems (Austria) and Vilabertran (Spain), Heidelberger Frühling andat the Oxford Lieder Festival.
