Info for Ace
Singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham announces her third studio album Ace, a pivotal and personal record that spans 14 tracks and is out on October 10 on Verve Forecast. Depending on the game, an Ace can be the highest or lowest card, zero or infinity. A breakup feels similar—one path crumbles, while all others remain infinitely possible. How do you write about heartbreak when you’re going through it? Ace, which was co-produced by Cunningham and Robbie Lackritz (Feist, Rilo Kiley, Bahamas, Peach Pit), finds Madison going through every part of it: falling out of love, having your heart broken, and then falling in love again. It’s about betrayal and betraying yourself. It is a stunning record and some of Cunningham’s best songwriting to date. It showcases her at the height of her powers.
Alongside the album announcement, Madison swaps her trusty guitar for lush piano on the first single, “My Full Name,” a vulnerable introduction that is both a love letter and a goodbye. Cunningham sings, “Love’s a kind of sorrow worth saving,” as she processes heartbreak and explores new beginnings.
Recently off the road with Mumford & Sons on their “Railroad Revival” Tour, the renowned guitarist and true artist’s artist steps into her own lane with Ace. As piano moves into the foreground, Cunningham presents a fourteen-track album that is honest and full of heart, even as it breaks. A follow up to her GRAMMY award-winning album, Revealer (2022), Cunningham wanted to take risks with Ace, leading with her emotions, following whatever path they showed her. “You think you’re on the verge of true healing but something scares you,” she says, “And you have to start all over.”
The record also features a collaboration from Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, who lends his vocals to “Wake.” “We did maybe ten takes where she played and sang perfectly every time and I struggled to keep up,” Pecknold says of their collaboration. “She’s a force and an inspiration.” On Ace, Cunningham certainly has the winning hand.
Named by Hozier as one of the “most talented creative forces of our generation,” Madison Cunningham is a singer-songwriter and guitarist with two previous albums on Verve Forecast, Who Are You Now (2019) and Revealer (2022), which won the GRAMMY for “Best Folk Album.” She’s collaborated as a guitarist and as a vocalist with countless artists: Lucy Dacus, Remi Wolf, Mumford & Sons, Lucius, and Andrew Bird, among others.

Madison Cunningham
Orange County, CA native, Madison Cunningham, possesses a keen understanding of songcraft that is perplexing for someone who’s just twenty years old. With an ear for melody that is reminiscent of early Joni Mitchell and approach to guitar and vocals that isn’t far off from long past heroes of Jeff Buckley or Nick Drake, Madison exhibits a unique ability to keep the listener on the edge as they explore her debut EP, Love, Lose, Remember. The oldest of five daughters, Madison picked up a guitar at the age of seven and was singing with her sisters and family in church by the age of 12. It was a happenstance meeting with producer Tyler Chester (Blake Mills, Sara Watkins) four years ago that helped Madison start to develop her approach as a songwriter. Released in early 2017, Love, Lose, Remember, showcases Madison’s ability as a songwriter and arranger with the lyrical content of someone who has lived twice the life of this young artist.
