Info for Sunflowers and Leather

After last year's breakthrough track ‘God Needs The Devil’, which was one of the best pop songs of 2024 on Spotify, everything suddenly happened very quickly for indie folk artist Jonah Kagen.

He has racked up over 450 million global streams, played successful support slots for big names such as Vance Joy, Wyatt Flores and Cameron Whitcomb, and received international attention for his acoustic guitar-based folk sound. Even though music wasn't on the agenda for most of his life. During his school days and youth, everything pointed to Jonah Kagen devoting his life to football – until one day his passion for music took over.

Inspired by songwriters such as Townes van Zandt, Jason Isbell and Andy McKee, the American began to create a timeless sound that not only sounds like the perfect road trip soundtrack – it was also created right there; on the roads of North America.

Inspired by Matthew McConaughey's autobiography ‘Greenlights’, the musician from Savannah, Georgia, embarked on a literal journey with his dog to create his debut album ‘Sunflowers and Leather’, writing and producing the 16 songs on the record single-handedly in a converted Airstream camper with a mobile studio. It was a journey marked by highs and lows, as Kagen grappled with themes such as self-doubt, heartbreak and spiritual questions. These thoughts can be felt in the recently released track ‘Burn Me’, in which the singer questions his faith accompanied by an acoustic guitar. Or in the song ‘You Again’, which is about heartbreak.
