Info for Beat

Over the last ten years, Tingvall Trio has evolved into an unparalleled success story for 'Jazz made in Germany'. What was once a rough & tumble band from Hamburg, is now regarded as one of the premier German export hits in its genre. And it's certainly no coincidence that this ensemble has managed to unite different generations of listeners behind its musical concept so well that even today's media-inundated young audience has been regained for Jazz.

They have won three ECHO Jazz awards as Ensemble of the Year or Live Act of the Year, four Jazz Awards respectively for more than 10,000 units of recorded audio media sold in Germany for each of their four studio albums thus far, live appearances in far and had more than 20 countries. There was enthusiastic feedback in magazines such as Jazzwise (UK) and Jazz Life (Japan), not to mention newspapers & periodicals such as El Pais (Spain), Die Zeit (Germany), Der Spiegel (Germany) or La Stampa (Italy). This is the first studio album after a three-year intermezzo. Simply entitled 'Beat'. As the name implies, a terse symbol for the time signatures that have fueled Tingvall Trio on its way: catchy melodies, brilliant ensemble playing, no inhibitions about rubbing shoulders with popular music. Jazz that reaches audiences' hearts and flirts using all the dynamics at a Rock band's command. Once again the trio has banked on Stefano Amerio, 'house recording engineer' for ECM and grand master at his Arte Suono studio in Udine, Italy, to capture these pieces of music, all of which have once again been composed by Martin Tingvall.

With Martin Tingvall at the wheel, a pianist influenced by everything from McCoy Tyner to Black Sabbath, and a music that allows poetry to flow, yet without masking the occasionally cryptic and darker side within his compositions. The Beat Goes On: Tingvall Trio will be kicking off the longest tour in its history starting this summer, with Europe as the first stop for the new program: Already scheduled are festivals in Germany, France and Italy, along with concerts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Holland and Luxembourg.

Martin Tingvall
Hej, I’m responsible for all kinds of black and white keys. I personally like different kinds of music and I hope that you can not only hear that in my songs, but also in the fantastic playing of my friends and colleagues Jürgen and Omar. Normally I compose when I am in my home country Sweden. In the little town of Snarestad in the south I have found a place of silence for myself. Here I have peace to work on new compositions and to play.

Omar Rodriguez Calvo
Hola, I am the bassist of this trio. Between Martin’s nordic melodies and Jürgen’s rhythms, I keep the us together with deep tones from my bass and my pulsating cuban heartbeat. The trio is a very important part of my musical journey; it bonds the emotions from life, everything between quiet expression and explosive fire. Our music comes from three very different personalities, but in the end we become one: Music!

Jürgen Spiegel
I am Jürgen, the drummer. Because of my experience in musical styles other than jazz (mostly rock, pop and hip-hop www.drums-for-your-song.com) I provide rhythm for the trio from a different side. I get lyrical input from Martin and Omar and I mix it with my way of playing, which i find extremely inspiring. The challenge of playing together is very enriching: no concert is the same as the last one and I believe that the compositions provide me with so much freedom and space that, together, we always end up on new shores.
